Sage Steele lost her ESPN career for saying what the network did not want America to hear.
Now Tony Dungy is telling his own version of that same story.
What he told her is what Sunday Night Football spent years making sure America never heard.
NBC Executives Said Dungy's Pro-Life March for Life Speech Made Them "Very Concerned"
Tony Dungy was one of the most decorated coaches in NFL history – a Super Bowl champion, the first black head coach to win the championship, and an unapologetic, publicly committed Christian.
NBC signed him anyway in 2009.
For 17 seasons, Dungy brought credibility, class, and conservative values to a Sunday night broadcast watched by tens of millions – and NBC knew exactly who he was from day one.
Then in January 2023, Dungy spoke at the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
The Left went berserk.
Former MSNBC personality Keith Olbermann publicly demanded NBC fire Dungy immediately for attending the pro-life rally – and NBC held the line just long enough for the pressure to do its work quietly.
In the spring of 2026, NBC informed Dungy he would not be returning for the upcoming season, replacing him with former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
In a preview of an interview set to air October 14 on The Sage Steele Show, Dungy gave the clearest answer yet on what actually happened.
"There were things that they didn't want me to talk about," he said. "They knew who I was when I got hired."
Sage Steele named what most people had already concluded – that NBC dropped him because of his pro-life convictions.
Dungy chuckled and confirmed it without saying it directly.
"They don't always appreciate you speaking about your faith."
Then he made clear he wasn't changing a thing.
"I am pro-life, and I'm not gonna be ashamed to say that."
Tony Dungy and Sage Steele Prove That Firing Pro-Life Christians Does Not Silence Anyone
The person drawing this story out of Tony Dungy is Sage Steele – who knows firsthand what it feels like to be pushed out of a major sports network for refusing to lock her Christian conservative views in a drawer.
ESPN hauled Steele into private meetings for years, warned her to keep her mouth shut, and eventually – after she sued – reached a settlement that ended her 16-year career at the network.
Steele left saying she wanted to exercise her First Amendment rights "more freely."
Now two Christians who were pushed out by America's biggest sports networks are sitting down together, and what comes out of it is not something NBC or ESPN wanted on the record.
BlazeTV host Jason Whitlock put it this way back in March: NBC used Tony Dungy for 17 years as PR cover, a signal to the country that the peacock network wasn't anti-Christian.
"I think they used Tony Dungy and the NFL used Tony Dungy to try to signal that 'hey, we're not anti-Christian,'" Whitlock said. "And now NBC and the NFL, I think, are kind of done with the biblical worldview."
Dungy himself had a different read on those 17 seasons.
He told CBN News during his time at NBC that he believed God placed him there specifically to be a voice for Christian athletes who wanted to speak openly about their faith.
He was right – which is exactly why they eventually showed him the door.
NBC didn't act when Olbermann demanded the firing – they waited three years, let the noise settle, and quietly restructured Football Night in America until Tony Dungy no longer fit.
That's not a coincidence – that's a strategy.
The sports media industrial complex has a playbook: tolerate Christian voices until the left's pressure campaigns become a revenue problem, then manufacture a "new look" that removes the believer without creating a martyr.
It worked when they pushed Sage Steele out of ESPN, and it worked when they pushed Tony Dungy off Sunday Night Football.
What it did not do – in either case – is silence anyone.
