DOJ Just Opened an Investigation Into the DC Jail That Held January 6 Prisoners

Democrats spent four years telling January 6 prisoners the DC jail conditions were acceptable.

Trump's DOJ just opened the investigation Biden refused to touch.

DC's own auditor documented what was happening inside those walls – and Democrats called the findings unfair.

Federal Judge Demanded a January 6 Civil Rights Investigation in 2021 and Biden Ignored It

In October 2021, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth held the DC jail warden and the city's corrections director in contempt of court after discovering that January 6 defendant Christopher Worrell had been denied surgery on a broken wrist for four months – while battling Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"It's clear to me the civil rights of the defendant were violated by the DC Department of Corrections," Lamberth said from the bench.

He called on the Justice Department to investigate whether the rights of January 6 defendants were being violated inside that facility.

Former Attorney General Merrick Garland's DOJ received that referral and buried it.

Marshals conducted an inspection and declared the wing holding J6 defendants adequate – then quietly moved roughly 400 other prisoners out of a secondary building where conditions didn't meet federal standards.

The January 6 defendants stayed put.

J6 defendants kept sitting in that jail for years – waiting for medical care that never came, sleeping in cells where temperatures spiked dangerously in summer, eating food from a service provider the facility's own reports had flagged for unsanitary conditions.

Biden's team called the situation acceptable.

Now Harmeet Dhillon is running the DOJ's Civil Rights Division.

She notified Washington DC that a federal investigation is open.

The probe will determine whether the DC Department of Corrections "engages in a pattern or practice of violating prisoners' and detainees' constitutional rights."

The investigation covers excessive force, inadequate medical care, unsanitary conditions of confinement, and inadequate nutrition.

"The Constitution protects the rights of every incarcerated American, including those held in custody in our nation's capital," Dhillon said.

She added that the DOJ is committed to ensuring "no inmate is confined in unconstitutional conditions or subject to unconstitutional mistreatment at the District of Columbia Department of Corrections."

As many as 50 people convicted in connection with January 6 were held in that facility.

DC Jail Conditions Were So Dangerous the City's Own Auditor Called for Immediate Action

DC Democrats didn't need the federal government to tell them their jail was a disaster.

Their own auditor said it.

In May 2025, the DC Auditor published a report calling the Central Detention Facility an urgent crisis.

The death rate at the DC jail is more than three times the national average, and during a single audit period staff used force more than 400 times – more than once per day.

There were 790 documented assaults in that same window, the jail couldn't control parasites, vermin, or mold, behavioral health staffing was gutted, and food service was repeatedly cited for unsanitary conditions.

The report also found the facility failed to consistently document or explain the circumstances of deaths in custody.

And Mayor Muriel Bowser's administration responded to all of it by calling the audit "not a fair, unbiased, and accurate assessment."

Bowser's team disputed the findings and kept running that facility into the ground.

President Trump pardoned approximately 1,500 people charged or convicted in connection with January 6 in January 2025.

20 of them were still in DC jails when the pardon was issued – still confined in a facility the city's own auditor had declared a crisis.

The DOJ notification went directly to Bowser – the outgoing Democratic mayor who ignored those warnings for years.

DC's own auditor warned about deteriorating conditions in 2019.

A federal judge demanded a civil rights investigation in 2021.

Democrats dismissed every warning and ran that jail into a federal investigation.

That investigation now gives the DOJ authority to compel records, conduct inspections, and pursue legal action – the enforcement power DC Democrats never gave their own auditor.

The people who threw peaceful Trump supporters into that facility – and then claimed the conditions were acceptable – just got put on notice by the Department of Justice.
