Elon Musk officially owns Twitter.
That already had Democrats melting down.
Now Kari Lake has them really losing it as she sets the “de facto public town square” ablaze.
A strange thing happened the instant Elon Musk took over Twitter.
Months ago, Elon Musk made the decision to buy Twitter and take the company private in order to return a culture of free speech on the platform because he says the “de facto public town square” is too important to have voices censored.
And as soon as Musk took over, right-leaning accounts saw an immediate uptick in followers and engagement, much to the dismay of the Left.
The NYT let the truth slip about huge reason leftists freaked out over Musk Twitter control – conservative accounts expanding
The New York Times reported that “the Twitter account of Kari Lake, a Republican candidate for governor in Arizona, gained 18,000 followers in the last 24 hours, a 600 percent increase from the usual number of new followers that Ms. Lake typically sees in a day, according to Memetica. Of those 18,000 new followers, over 3,100 were new to Twitter. Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican of Colorado, gained over 18,679 new followers in the last 24 hours, a 1,200 percent jump above normal, Memetica said. Nearly half of those new followers were also new to Twitter.”
But new followers or returning followers only tell a small piece of the story.
It appears as though Twitter was algorithmically suppressing right-leaning and counter-narrative perspectives.
Right-wing accounts saw similar boosts in followers and engagement when it was first reported that Twitter accepted Musk’s bid to buy the company.
Prominent right-wingers reported that their follower accounts suddenly spiked after being conspicuously frozen for months, and others said that they were seeing names in their Twitter feed that they hadn’t seen in ages.
The shadowbans have apparently been lifted, as if left-wing ideologues within the company were “shredding” code in advance of Musk’s arrival.
Also, The Intercept’s recent bombshell about collusion between Big Tech companies and the federal government brings into focus just how much the Democrat establishment was suppressing the conversation on social media.
Former Twitter attorney and head of trust and safety Vijaya Gadde, whom Musk fired on day one of owning the company, was part of a group of tech executives that met monthly with the feds.
In addition to The Intercept exposé, independent reporter Alex Berenson showed how the White House pressured Twitter to ban him for spreading COVID “misinformation,” which turned out to be true.
While Musk’s arrival at Twitter represents a temporary sea change, the establishment is not going to give up its propaganda machine without a fight.
The true test will be if Musk can keep Twitter free, or if he will be swallowed up by the D.C. Swamp like Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg were.
