Now Democrats and Republicans just voted to give them something far more powerful.
Congress buried something inside a child safety bill that has nothing to do with protecting children.
The KIDS Act Age Verification Requirement No One Is Talking About
The Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act passed the House on June 29 in a 267-117 vote.
The marketing was flawless: protect children from predators, groomers, and harmful content online.
To prove a user is a minor, a platform cannot guess.
It has to verify age – and to verify age, it has to verify identity.
That means every adult in America would need to upload a government-issued ID just to access social media, political commentary, or independent news sites.
Not just the kids.
Every American with a smartphone or a computer.
Under the App Store Accountability Act buried inside the same package, Apple and Google would be required to verify every user's age before allowing a single app download.
Platforms that get it wrong face crushing federal fines – which means they won’t guess.
They will demand your papers.
Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-KY), the bill's lead House author, called the KIDS Act "an important milestone, not a finish line."
He was more right than he knew.
The milestone is the end of anonymous political speech in America.
How KOSA Became a Blueprint for Online Surveillance
The Swamp has run this play before.
They sold the PATRIOT Act as an anti-terrorism tool – one that most conservatives proudly supported after September 11.
Within two years, the NSA was vacuuming up the browsing history and phone records of ordinary Americans who had never been suspected of anything.
The KIDS Act works on the exact same logic: mandate that platforms stop treating users as anonymous, require identity verification to comply with age restrictions, and watch every site, every forum, and every comment section transform into a logged database tied to your legal name.
Think about Universal Background Checks for firearms.
Conservatives have always known the UBC trap: the only way to enforce background checks on private transfers is to first build a complete list of every gun owner in America.
The KIDS Act works the same way.
You cannot enforce age restrictions without a mandatory identity registry.
The database is always the point.
They just need a reason to build it.
Right now, millions of conservatives speak freely online only because no one in Washington can tie their words to their name.
The IRS targeted Tea Party groups with a list.
The DOJ labeled parents at school board meetings domestic terrorists with a list.
The FBI ran a domestic extremism program that flagged conservative symbols and phrases – with a list.
Every time the Left has gained access to a database of political opponents, they have used it.
Online anonymity is not cowardice – it is the last wall between your name and their next list.
The KIDS Act destroys that barrier under cover of protecting children.
The Government Database Congress Is Building on Every American Online
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has co-sponsored KOSA since its early versions and is now working directly with the White House on a new Senate package.
That is the part that should worry every conservative in America.
When the Republican champion of the bill is cutting deals with the administrative state, the question is not whether the database gets built.
The question is who gets to search it next.
Britain already answered that question.
After the UK passed similar online safety legislation, British citizens began getting arrested for social media posts that contradicted official government positions.
That is not a cautionary tale.
Britain is the next chapter.
COVID proved the same thing closer to home.
Democrats used pandemic emergency powers to monitor churches, track who was gathering where, and shut down businesses that defied lockdown orders – then quietly dismantled it all when the emergency ended and nobody was watching.
They’ve already shown what they do with federal surveillance tools – they aimed them at Trump's campaign, his advisors, and his supporters.
Every database Congress builds today is a weapon for whoever holds power tomorrow.
The KIDS Act does not protect children from predators.
It builds the machinery to track and identify every American who speaks freely online – and hands the keys to whatever administration comes next.
The Left wants you worried about the children.
