Jake Altman joined the Democratic Socialists of America as a true believer – and watched communists hollow it out from the inside.
Now he is telling the country what he saw – and what it means for November.
What he told The Free Press about the people running the most powerful radical-left organization in America should alarm every voter.
Anti-Communism Became a Firing Offense
Jake Altman joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2013 when the group was a small, aging collection of old-school social democrats.
By the time he left, the organization had replaced every guardrail that once kept communism out of the building.
"There were debates at the time about how much Leninism do we want to let into DSA," Altman told The Free Press.
He watched those debates end – not through argument, but through attrition.
The Left Caucus, formed in 2014, drove out the older members who remembered what communism actually looked like in practice.
"Anti-communism became forbidden," Altman said. "And you can't hold this view without running all the old people who experienced the 20th century out of the organization."
That was the point.
Every person old enough to remember the Soviet Union, the gulags, the executions, the mass starvation – they were methodically removed.
What remained was a younger, wealthier, angrier membership with no living memory of what they were building.
The DSA Mob Tactic Used to Silence Anyone Who Speaks Up
Altman knows the purge isn't theoretical because he survived one.
"I can speak from personal experience that if you dissent, there will be efforts to silence you," he told The Free Press. "They use mob tactics, basically."
When a member challenges DSA leadership, an organized online mob descends – smearing, denouncing, and isolating the dissenter until they quit or go silent.
Altman described a local union in Ann Arbor that publicly objected to DSA members vandalizing and intimidating public officials at their homes.
The union's statement was mild – a simple declaration that property destruction had gone too far.
DSA flooded the union's social media with genocide accusations and pressured its own members to turn against their colleagues.
This tactic is used against anyone who steps out of line – and it works every time.
Altman's warning to Fox News was direct: the DSA has been "captured."
"One of my real concerns is that we see a lot of resistance to anti-communism within DSA, even from the moderate wing of the DSA," he said. "And I think this is very, very dangerous."
The City Journal – published by the Manhattan Institute – confirmed what Altman described: most members of DSA's governing National Political Committee openly identify with communist ideology.
Maoists, Trotskyists, and Leninists now share seats on the executive board of the organization shaping Democrat primary elections from coast to coast.
Speaker Mike Johnson called it exactly what it is after DSA-aligned candidates defeated establishment Democrats in Michigan, New York, and Colorado: a contest to determine "whether we're going to maintain our status as the world's great superpower as a constitutional republic, or we're going to tear that down to the foundation like the communist Democrats want to do."
AOC – the face of the movement to most Americans – no longer satisfies DSA purists.
The organization that calls Bernie Sanders too moderate is now running candidates in November general elections with a straight shot at Congress.
DSA's platform calls for abolishing the presidency, the Senate, prisons, borders, and the Supreme Court.
That platform is now the operating agenda of a faction that won Democrat primaries in safely blue districts – and those candidates will sit in the next Congress.
Altman spent nearly a decade inside DSA watching communists dismantle every firewall that kept them from controlling it.
He got out.
The Democrat Party didn't.
