Criminally Indicted SPLC Secretly Infiltrated Classrooms in 42 States and Nobody Stopped It

The Southern Poverty Law Center spent thirty years calling concerned parents hate group members.

Now a new report shows exactly what the indicted organization put inside their children's schools.

What investigators found in 42 states is something every school board in America is hoping you never see.

SPLC Learning for Justice Curriculum Found in 169 School Districts Across 42 States

The SPLC built its fundraising empire on one promise: it fights hate groups.

Federal prosecutors say it was paying them instead.

The April 21 indictment charges the SPLC with 11 counts – wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealed money laundering.

Between 2014 and 2023, the Justice Department says the SPLC funneled over $3 million to paid informants – people affiliated with the United Klans of America, the National Socialist Party of America, and the Aryan Nations-linked Sadistic Souls Motorcycle Club.

One of those informants helped plan the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

The SPLC paid him roughly $270,000 over eight years.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the SPLC was "manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred."

While that scheme ran, the same organization was pushing its "Learning for Justice" curriculum into government school classrooms – and administrators were welcoming it right through the front door.

SPLC Hate Map Put Moms for Liberty and Focus on the Family Alongside the KKK in K-12 Schools

The SPLC launched its education arm in 1991 as "Teaching Tolerance."

The name changed to "Learning for Justice" in 2021 – around the same time the program quietly deleted its own impact statement that had previously claimed reach to "more than 500,000 educators."

Defending Education president Nicole Neily told Fox News the SPLC had been "poisoning pupils' minds around the country for years with its toxic curriculum."

The Defending Education report documents how that curriculum landed in 169 school districts across 42 states and Washington, D.C. – woven into teacher trainings, classroom lesson plans, Social Emotional Learning frameworks, and district equity policies.

The materials push gender identity instruction, white privilege ideology, and Black Lives Matter content – including materials aimed at children as young as pre-kindergarten.

Cambridge, Massachusetts schools built the Social Justice Standards into physical education classes from junior kindergarten through fifth grade.

The California Department of Education, Illinois State Board of Education, and Chicago Public Schools all incorporated or referenced the materials.

The American School Counselor Association – which claims over 43,000 members – modeled its Student Standards on the SPLC curriculum.

Even the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian lists Learning for Justice as a recommended resource.

Randi Weingarten and NEA Defended SPLC After Federal Indictment on Fraud Charges

The NEA and the American Federation of Teachers didn't just tolerate the SPLC's presence in government schools – they actively promoted it.

The AFT was listing "Teaching Tolerance" as a school discipline resource as far back as 2016.

When the indictment dropped last month, NEA president Becky Pringle went on Bluesky to condemn it as government overreach.

AFT president Randi Weingarten called the indictment "part of a coordinated attack on civil rights."

Neither union told parents their children were sitting in classrooms shaped by an organization the federal government just charged with funding white supremacists.

A Moms for Liberty leader confronted Montgomery County, Maryland school officials at a school board meeting last week, demanding answers about why the district was still defending the organization.

She got no answers.

The Curriculum That Keeps Running After the Handcuffs Came Out

FBI Director Kash Patel cut all ties with the SPLC in October, calling it a "partisan smear machine."

Federal prosecutors indicted the organization on April 21.

The curriculum is still running.

An Arizona district's curriculum audit turned up a resource directing teachers to send students to the SPLC's hate map – the same map that places Moms for Liberty and Defending Education alongside Klan chapters.

The district moved to remove it.

Most haven't looked.

The SPLC was never a civil rights organization.

It was a reputation laundry – build enough credibility fighting the Klan to make the hit list unquestionable, then use that list to destroy conservatives who had nothing to do with the Klan.

Moms for Liberty. Turning Point USA. Defending Education. Focus on the Family. All placed alongside neo-Nazis on the same hate map that schools were directing children to consult.

The curriculum was the delivery system – getting into classrooms so the SPLC's definition of who counts as a hate group would be baked into children before parents knew to object.

The SPLC labeled Moms for Liberty a hate group for showing up at school board meetings.

Those same parents were right about everything.

Every school board still running this curriculum is banking on parents not knowing what you now know – and the only thing that changes that is a parent who shows up and says so.
