Britain Just Launched a Real Life Ministry of Truth

Britain already jailed its own citizens for social media posts about the 2024 riots.

Now it just announced a new government agency with the power to silence anyone it decides is spreading disinformation.

And the last time Britain built a machine like this, a whistleblower revealed what it was actually doing.

Britain's 77th Brigade: The Secret Psyops Unit That Lied About Spying on Its Own Citizens

The British Army launched the 77th Brigade – its secretive psychological warfare unit – in 2015 with one promise: information operations would target adversaries abroad, not British citizens at home.

The Ministry of Defence said the 77th "does not, and has never, conducted any kind of action against British citizens."

That lasted until a whistleblower came forward.

A soldier who served inside the unit told investigators that domestic political surveillance went ahead with a "wink and a nod" from the government.

Files from March 2020 showed 77th Brigade soldiers collecting tweets from ordinary British citizens during COVID and passing them to central government.

They weren't tracking Russian bots.

They were tracking Members of Parliament – including Green MP Caroline Lucas – for criticizing the government and sharing news the Army didn't like.

When the exposure became too large to contain, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace quietly admitted the unit had monitored citizens' social media to "assess UK disinformation trends."

The unit was eventually dissolved – but not really: in April, the 77th Brigade was quietly folded into the Land Special Operations Force, where it became less visible, not less active.

The National Centre for Information Defence and What It Means for UK Free Speech

Standing before the United Nations General Assembly last week, new Prime Minister Andy Burnham – Britain's fourth PM in four years – announced the National Centre for Information Defence.

The centre will bring together intelligence agencies, law enforcement, government departments, and social media companies in one coordinated machine.

Its stated mission: detect, attribute, and disrupt "hostile information attacks" from foreign powers – primarily Russia.

Burnham told the UN that Russia spends £1.3 billion a year on disinformation – forging the branding of British institutions, planting fake news, and amplifying what his government calls "far-right narratives." He claimed Russia even tried to interfere in the 2019 general election.

The 77th Brigade made the same argument when it launched, and once the infrastructure was in place, the surveillance turned inward.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called it what it is: "a Ministry of Truth to clamp down on free speech."

Big Brother Watch – the civil liberties organization that exposed the 77th Brigade's domestic surveillance – issued an immediate warning this week.

The Counter Disinformation Unit, the Rapid Response Unit, RICU, and the 77th Brigade have already been caught "recording, flagging and triggering the censorship of Britons' lawful speech," the group said.

MPs, journalists, human rights campaigners, and ordinary citizens were all flagged in so-called disinformation reports for "lawful, truthful speech critical of the Government."

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting insists the government is "not interested in policing domestic political dissent."

Britain's government gave the same assurances about the 77th Brigade.

Americans have seen this before.

The Biden administration launched CISA as a cybersecurity agency to counter foreign threats to critical infrastructure, and within two years it was flagging American citizens' tweets for removal, tracking conservative speech on elections, and scrubbing its own website of references to "domestic disinformation" to hide what it had done.

Republicans in Congress documented every step and called it "the censorship-industrial complex."

The pattern is the same on both sides of the Atlantic – governments use foreign threats to build the apparatus, promise the mandate stays foreign, then turn it on their own people.

Burnham made the same promise from the UN podium.

The whistleblower who blew open the 77th Brigade already told you what that promise is worth.

Britain has built this machine twice and America had its version under Biden – the only question left is which government loses the next whistleblower first.
