The Boy Scouts of America spent a century building the kind of young men who would go on the moon.
Then they went woke.
Now Pete Hegseth has forced them to reverse course, but the damage runs too deep for a government memo to fix.
Hegseth Told Boy Scouts to Drop DEI or Lose the Pentagon
The organization that called itself the Boy Scouts for 114 years rebranded as Scouting America in 2024 – a name change that announced exactly what it was: a break from its boys-focused heritage in favor of DEI programming, gender identity policies, and identity-politics merit badges.
Pete Hegseth had seen enough.
In February, the Secretary of War threatened to end the Pentagon's century-old partnership with the organization – logistical support, access to government facilities, and equipment worldwide – unless it reversed course.
Scouting America agreed.
The terms were explicit: revert membership applications to biological sex only, prohibit boys and girls from sharing tents and showers, and scrap the DEI programming.
Hegseth explained the stakes in a February video.
"After 2012, the Boy Scouts lost their way, and a once-great organization became gravely wounded," he said. "DEI crept in. The name was changed to 'Scouting America.' The focus on God as the ruler of the universe was watered down to include openness to humanism and Earth-centered pagan religions."
The compliance showed up this week at the National Jamboree in West Virginia – the flagship gathering that now wraps up without the dedicated spaces for gay youth, transgender scouts, and scouts of color that had become fixtures at recent events.
Gone too is the DEI merit badge, replaced with a military service badge.
The Pentagon will review compliance again in late August, and if Scouting America falls short, the military pulls out entirely.
Boy Scout Membership Has Collapsed Since the Woke Pivot
The left-wing activists now crying about the loss of rainbow tents would rather not talk about what their policies actually produced.
In 1972, the Boy Scouts had 6.5 million members.
By 2019 – after years of DEI expansion, name changes, and leftist virtue-signaling – they were down to 1.97 million.
Then came 2020, when membership cratered to 1.12 million in a single year.
The organization filed for bankruptcy the same year, eventually settling sex abuse claims for $2.5 billion.
By 2023, fewer than 15,700 scouts attended the National Jamboree – a gathering that drew more than 70,000 in 1973.
Every single "inclusion" initiative the organization adopted accelerated the collapse.
Trail Life USA Is the Christian Alternative Families Are Choosing Instead
While Scouting America was busy redesigning its identity, conservative families were building something better from scratch.
Trail Life USA launched in 2013 – the same year the Boy Scouts first opened membership to openly gay youth.
The group does not hide what it is: a Christ-centered, boys-only program chartered through local churches, focused on outdoor skills, faith, character, and producing young men.
In its first year, Trail Life had 20,000 members.
By 2025, the organization reported more than 70,000 active members across 1,500 troops in all 50 states.
Trail Life CEO Mark Hancock described his organization's philosophy as "moral steadiness" over "cultural reinvention" – a message conservative families received loud and clear.
Scouting America Is Not Out of the Woods
The Pentagon deal changes the programs, not the leadership.
The same executives who spent a decade dismantling the Boy Scouts brand are now the ones being asked to rebuild it.
The organization still calls itself Scouting America – and the word "Boy" remains absent.
And while they are removing pride tents at the Jamboree under Pentagon supervision, gay scouts who feel unwelcome are getting sympathetic press coverage – a reminder that the activist infrastructure inside the organization is still intact and waiting for the next administration to change the calculus.
The February agreement requires Pentagon officials to hold "periodic touchpoints" monitoring compliance. That is government oversight keeping a youth organization in line – and it disappears the moment a Democrat wins the White House.
The Market Already Delivered a Verdict
Conservative families did not wait for Pete Hegseth.
They found Trail Life, American Heritage Girls, and a dozen other alternatives built from the ground up on the values Scouting America abandoned.
The families who left are not coming back because the Pentagon made Scouting America remove a tent.
That is a longer road than any memorandum of understanding can pave.
