Dr. Frita Fisher Told Joy Reid a UFC Joke Gave Her Heart Palpitations
Dr. Frita Fisher – a quadruple-board-certified nephrologist – joined former MSNBC host Joy Reid's YouTube show to discuss what she called the medical fallout from Josh Hokit's post-fight quip at UFC Freedom 250.
After knocking out Derrick Lewis on the South Lawn of the White House, Hokit told Joe Rogan: "And lastly, Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?"
The crowd gave a mixed reaction. Dr. Fisher gave a medical one.
"I felt my heart having palpitations," she told Reid on air. "I felt my chest tighten. I felt personally humiliated as a black woman."
Then she tried to connect that reaction to cardiovascular data.
"We literally have data that systemic racism, chronic discrimination, and also public humiliation – we have data that these things increase cardiovascular negative outcomes," Fisher said.
She did not stop there.
Fisher told Reid that cortisol spikes triggered by public humiliation drive the exact cardiovascular damage she was describing – and that black women experience those spikes at higher rates because of chronic exposure to what she called "dehumanization."
"This is why so many of us have increased strokes," Fisher said. "It actually is real."
UFC head Dana White, for his part, condemned Hokit's comment in a text to Time Magazine: "I understand that the Obamas are public figures but I'm completely against saying nasty and false things about people's families."
Dr. Frita Fisher Is a Kidney Specialist Not a Cardiologist
Joy Reid's show is not going to tell you what actually drives that number.
This is the kind of content that got Joy Reid fired.
MSNBC rebranded as MS Now and pushed Reid out in 2025. The network had watched her audience shrink to 773,000 viewers on her final nights – going up against Laura Ingraham's 3.8 million. Executives had seen enough.
No other television network came calling.
Notice what Dr. Fisher left off her diagnosis.
She is a nephrologist – a kidney specialist whose television appearances have covered COVID, Ozempic, and general health tips. Cardiology is not her field. Neither is epidemiology.
A kidney doctor felt her chest tighten watching a UFC post-fight interview and booked herself on Joy Reid's YouTube channel to announce a public health emergency.
Now she is connecting a post-match one-liner to black women having strokes – while the actual research on black cardiovascular health points to diet, genetics, blood pressure management, and access to care.
She closed the segment with this advice: "Certainly don't be afraid to go and get mental help."
Reid's audience should take her up on that.

Joy Reid ran The ReidOut on MSNBC for five years before the network showed her the door.
She moved to YouTube – where she books doctors to declare conservative jokes a cardiovascular emergency.
It is not 2020 anymore. The audience for this content evaporated along with Reid's cable contract.
Trump sits in the front row of White House UFC events. Dana White just staged the first professional sporting event ever held on the South Lawn. America watched seven fights, every one ending in a stoppage, on the grounds of the White House.
The Left's answer to that was a YouTube segment arguing a punchline is killing black women.
Nobody at MSNBC booked a cardiologist when the left spent years calling Melania Trump an escort. No doctor appeared on Reid's show to explain the cardiovascular toll of the vile rumors spread about the Trump family for a decade.
The medical emergency only materializes when the target is a Democrat.
That is the rule. It has always been the rule.
Joy Reid’s career has completely cratered and she’s left doing segments on YouTube that would even be embarrassing for peak woke in the summer of 2020.
