The SPLC was already under federal indictment for secretly paying Ku Klux Klan members with donor money.
Now, the Treasury Department just dropped a separate report that makes the indictment look like the smaller story.
And the report connects the SPLC to something it spent the last year telling Christians was fiction.
JPMorgan, PNC, Wells Fargo and TD Bank All Used the SPLC as a Debanking Weapon
Debanking is exactly what it sounds like.
Banks close your account or cut off your payment processing not because you broke any law, but because someone decided your politics made you too risky to do business with.
Christian organizations and conservative businesses spent the Biden years reporting exactly that.
Biden's regulators denied it was happening.
Trump signed an executive order in August 2025 directing federal banking regulators to find out if it was real.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency dropped its findings this month.
The 47-page document traces how PNC Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and TD Bank were using the Southern Poverty Law Center's – the SPLC's – "hate group" labels to decide who deserved access to American financial services.
PNC Bank declined to issue a line of credit to a media company in late 2021 because its owners had funded "several Christian conservative groups, including several identified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center."
One PNC employee wrote in an internal email: "I'm in the camp of a hard no."
JPMorgan's payment subsidiary WePay went even further.
WePay built an internal screening system that flagged "MAGA," "Make America Great," and "America First" as prohibited merchant terms.
In February 2021, WePay shut down a retailer selling Trump merchandise, determining that the products promoted "hate, violence, or racial intolerance."
A WePay employee confirmed it: "MAGA and Trump-related items are part of it."
In June 2021, WePay closed the account of a religious conservative nonprofit after internal discussions flagged the SPLC's "extremist hate group" designation.
JPMorgan reputational risk officers recommended they "exit from this account."
JPMorgan has since shut WePay down and acknowledged the screening system "did not meet our expectations."
The SPLC Called Christian Debanking a Conspiracy Theory Then Got Caught Running It
Last year the SPLC published a memo through its "Hatewatch" monitoring project declaring that anti-Christian debanking was not real.
The SPLC specifically blamed Christian conservatives for spreading conspiratorial claims of victimhood.
The Alliance Defending Freedom, a mainstream Christian legal firm that has won multiple cases at the Supreme Court, was singled out by name as the organization pushing unfounded alarmism. ADF had been right about all of it.
Its senior counsel Jeremy Tedesco called the OCC report a "watershed moment" because it demolished the SPLC's conspiracy theory with federal evidence.
That verdict came from the U.S. Treasury Department, not a conservative think tank.
SPLC Indictment and the Arrest of CFO Heidi Beirich Reveal Where Donor Money Went
The banking operation is only part of what Treasury documented about the SPLC.
In April 2026, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted the SPLC on 11 counts – six counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The charge: the SPLC secretly funneled more than $3 million in donor funds to members of the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Nations, and the American Nazi Party, all while publicly raising money by warning donors those exact groups were destroying America.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said the SPLC is "manufacturing racism to justify its existence."
FBI Director Kash Patel said the SPLC hid its criminal payments from banks by routing money through fictitious front companies. The indictment names three of them: Fox Photography, Rare Books Warehouse, and Center Investigative Agency.
In August 2026, the SPLC's former CFO Heidi Beirich was arrested on a superseding indictment revealing she had lived with and shared bank accounts with a neo-Nazi informant the SPLC was paying.
Approximately $140,000 in donor money flowed into those joint accounts. Beirich was not a low-level staffer – she was the SPLC's chief financial officer, the person controlling the money the SPLC used to blacklist Christian organizations across the country.
The organization that got Christian conservatives kicked out of JPMorgan for selling MAGA merchandise was secretly wiring donor money to Klansmen.
How the Southern Poverty Law Center Used Its Hate Group List as a Debanking Machine
The SPLC did not stumble into becoming a debanking weapon.
Its "Extremist Files" and "hate group" designations worked as a political blacklist that corporate America, federal agencies, and the press treated as authoritative for years.
Amazon excluded nonprofits on the SPLC list, and the Biden Treasury's FinCEN division sent SPLC-flagged lists directly to bank leadership. Socialist Democrats used the same list to target the tax-exempt status of Christian nonprofits.
The OCC report lays out the mechanism: "reputational risk" departments at major banks treated an SPLC designation as enough reason to close accounts and deny credit lines outright.
The banks that denied service trusted the SPLC's judgment over their own Christian customers.
Every Christian who raised the alarm about being debanked was right. And the SPLC spent years calling them liars while running the debanking operation that was targeting them.
