Democrats are using Big Tech as a cudgel against their political enemies.
Not even people with mainstream views are safe online.
But one Republican Governor just struck a huge blow against Big Tech censorship.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is leading the charge against left-wing insanity at the state level.
Despite having the second highest population in the country, Florida remained open throughout the second half of the pandemic and significantly outperformed many states.
DeSantis also banned the Marxist-oriented Critical Race Theory from being taught in public schools or used in governmental capacities.
Now he’s going after Big Tech censorship with a new law that holds companies accountable for deplatforming, shadow-banning, and censoring political candidates.
The New York Post reports:
“Social media companies would be unable to permanently kick people off their platforms under a tough new Florida law. The bill . . . would make it a crime to remove state political candidates from Twitter and Facebook, and would mete out penalties of $250,000 a day for any statewide candidate who is deplatformed.”
Twitter made up arbitrary rules to take away the account of conservative firebrand Laura Loomer even though she was running for Congress in Florida.
The new bill would stop what amounts to election interference.
The Post continued:
“Removing more local candidates would cost the company $25,000 a day. The bill also requires tech companies to give users seven days notice that they are at risk of being banned and offer them the opportunity to correct the issue. Suspensions of up to 14 days would still be allowed.”
This is an important first step in fighting back against Big Tech.
They still have many ways to put their thumbs on the scale, but the new Florida law makes it more difficult.
Shadow-banning is a particularly insidious way of silencing people.
Users might not even know their reach is being curtailed.
Some conservatives have complained that they randomly lose a lot of followers, or they gain followers at a steady growth rate, then their number of followers magically freezes.
Other prominent right-wing commentators have not been given blue checkmark verification despite a huge following.
Meanwhile, a left-winger with a small fraction of followers gets verified.
For example, the Christian satire site The Babylon Bee has 948,000 followers on Twitter, but still has not received verification.
Twitter also has the power to decide which hashtags trend and which ones don’t.
The battle against Big Tech censorship is a long and arduous one, but DeSantis has shown he’s up for the fight.
