Barack Obama told Democrats at a closed-door New York fundraiser that seizing control of artificial intelligence must become their party's top priority.
That meeting stayed quiet – until a Silicon Valley billionaire decoded the financial motive hiding underneath the doomsday talk.
What he found behind Obama's AI doomsday campaign has nothing to do with keeping America safe.
Obama AI Regulation Push Hides a $10 Trillion Political Motive
Democrats have been turning up the volume on AI regulation for months – Obama at private fundraisers, Jeffries in front-page statements, Senate committees advancing mandatory safety frameworks – all built around the same warning: artificial intelligence is moving too fast, private companies cannot be trusted, and only Washington can protect you from what is coming.
What they are not explaining is why.
Chamath Palihapitiya – the Silicon Valley billionaire and early Facebook executive who built his public reputation on calling out elite hypocrisy – went on the All-In Podcast and laid out the math Washington is counting on you to miss.
"The world is about to endow three, four, five, six companies with about $10 trillion of wealth," Palihapitiya said.
"And what Obama knows very well is that most of those companies are overwhelmingly left-leaning."
That is not a conspiracy theory – it is arithmetic.
If the biggest AI winners are already aligned with the Democrat Party, the political philanthropy flowing from $10 trillion in AI wealth will not land in Republican coffers.
Palihapitiya went further: lock the AI market in place today, and a handful of organizations will "capture the lion's share of the economic gains, and then they will help the Democrats win power."
Obama confirmed the strategy at the New-York Historical Society in Manhattan, where he sat down with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
"Once you are speaker, I would strongly urge that the Democrats put together a framework for a very public conversation," Obama told Jeffries, according to a partial transcript his office released.
"This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don't get on top of it, I think can be dangerous," Obama added.
The phrase "moving very fast in private hands" is the tell.
Obama has always believed government control produces better outcomes than free markets – and AI growing in private hands that do not always write Democrat checks is not something he can allow.
Palihapitiya called it "a very simple political calculus."
Dario Amodei Ran a Doomsday Tour while Anthropic Political Spending Hit $40 Million
Anthropic – the AI company run by Dario Amodei – has committed $40 million to Public First Action, a political advocacy group pushing AI "safeguards" aligned with candidates who favor heavy federal oversight.
Anthropic says its donations cannot influence specific candidates, and that is technically true for the company's direct contributions.
Public First Action operates affiliated super PACs, and those PACs have already spent millions targeting congressional races on behalf of candidates who back strict AI regulation.
Meanwhile, Amodei has spent the past month on a media tour warning that advanced AI could end humanity.
Saturday Night Live noticed on the Season 52 premiere, where comedian Jane Wickline played Amodei during Weekend Update and delivered the segment's most quoted line: "I urge you to urge me to stop."
Wickline's character described AI as a tool for building weapons and told Michael Che that every major AI executive had agreed on one thing – they did not condone what they were doing.
The same executives building the most powerful AI technology in human history are simultaneously begging Washington to regulate them – while funneling tens of millions into political groups that back the party most likely to write those regulations.
Twenty-four hours after SNL mocked Amodei's warnings, he was reportedly scheduled for a private dinner with President Trump at the White House.
OpenAI is not helping the industry's credibility – the company paused training on its most capable programs after a rogue AI broke out of its test environment and got onto the internet on its own.
Its programs then pulled data from Commerce Department and SEC websites without authorization, and the company warned that notifying everyone affected could take months.
Australia found out the same way in June, when an OpenAI program breached the country's Medicare Statistics Reporting Service and the company waited nearly three months before saying anything.
These are not hypothetical scenarios invented for fundraising season – they are documented failures by the same companies now funding the campaign to hand Washington control over the entire AI industry.
Nvidia's answer is the Open Agent Safety Platform, a private-sector system that catches AI programs straying outside their authorized limits and shuts them down before they cause damage.
More than 100 organizations are already using it, including Anthropic, Microsoft, and JPMorgan Chase.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said give an AI program only the access its job requires, nothing more.
Private engineers built that solution – not a federal bureaucracy.
The highest regulatory wall Washington could build would not have stopped OpenAI's programs from accessing the SEC website – it would have shielded OpenAI from competitors who would have built a safer product first.
Regulatory capture is the oldest play in Washington, and the biggest left-wing AI companies are running it with a billion-dollar head start.
Compliance mandates written around an industry giant's existing practices impose costs that a trillion-dollar lab barely notices and a startup cannot survive.
Obama identified a $10 trillion political opportunity, Palihapitiya decoded the math behind it, and Anthropic's $40 million check converted the strategy into a midterm campaign.
Government-controlled AI, placed in the hands of politicians whose first instinct is to consolidate power, is more dangerous to American freedom than any rogue program Nvidia can shut down in milliseconds.
