In many cases, leftist governments like the Joe Biden administration worked to censor their constituents online, especially those critical of the government.
The United Kingdom has led the charge in this global fight to limit free speech, especially online.
After seizing control of Parliament last year, the left-wing Labour Party has looked to squash dissent, censoring as many Britons as possible using the Online Safety Act.
Passed in 2023 under the last Conservative government, this piece of legislation gives the government sweeping powers to keep a lid on free speech.
Just recently, Labour Member of Parliament Lola McEvoy suggested using this law to completely ban certain social media apps in the United Kingdom.
“If these big platforms that have huge users don’t comply with the Online Safety Act, then they have no right to be accessed in this country,” the Labour MP stated On the PoliticsJoe podcast.
She then told PoliticsJoe listeners, “So I think that’s what the law’s about.”
These remarks came just days after the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a ban on TikTok, serving as the most recent example of a major Western nation entirely banning a social media platform.
The TikTok ban remains in limbo since Congress gave U.S. Presidents wide discretion to enforce the ban and Donald Trump is trying to find a reasonable outcome.
Meanwhile, nations such as Brazil and Australia have fully set their sights on social media platforms like X, worrying that these platforms could facilitate anti-government conversations and sentiments.
However, it’s not just British citizens that leftists like Lola McEvoy want to silence.
McEvoy even went as far as to suggest that foreign citizens should have no right to criticize the British government.
More specifically, McEvoy stated that the British government should not tolerate criticism from “unelected citizens from other countries.”
She pointed to the widespread criticism of Minister for Safeguarding Jess Phillips, where many people across the globe essentially blamed her for the violence committed by migrants against British women and girls.
McEvoy stated that this criticism created a very “dangerous situation,” referring to the criticism as “bullying and harassment.”
The current Labour Government has expressed its disdain for free speech and individual liberty
Over the past several years, so-called moderate Conservatives and Leftists have taken alarming measures, designed to significantly limit free speech.
These anti-free speech zealots have even gone as far as to suggest that foreign nationals should pay the price for insulting their radical laws and measures.
Such policies have stirred up widespread outrage, with many Britons turning to the Reform Party, which has pledged to stop government-facilitated censorship.
