Thom Tillis Threatened to Blow Up Trump’s Next Attorney General Nomination Before He Picks

Thom Tillis got forced out of the Senate and decided to spend his final months making Trump's life as difficult as possible.

Now he has set his sights on one of the most important jobs in America – and he has the power to block it indefinitely.

The man who voted against Trump's agenda ran straight to CNN with one bullet left and just told the world exactly where he is aiming it.

The Senator Who Already Killed One Trump Nominee and Is Targeting the Attorney General Next

This is not a threat. It is a pattern.

In May 2025, Tillis sat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and announced he would not support Ed Martin – Trump's pick for U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. – because Martin had previously defended January 6 defendants as a private attorney. Trump had to withdraw the nomination.

The Judiciary Committee runs 12-10 Republican. Every Democrat votes no on every Trump nominee. That means Tillis is the kill switch. One man. One vote. One obsession.

Now Pam Bondi is gone – fired by Trump. The most powerful law enforcement job in America is empty. Tillis went straight to CNN to announce his terms.

"For me, the threshold for somebody following Pam Bondi ends the moment I hear they said one thing that excused the events of January the 6th," he told Kaitlan Collins. "I won't support any nominee who thought that any element of January 6th was excused."

He means it. He has already proved it.

The January 6 Litmus Test That Eliminates Every Trump AG Pick

Trump's next attorney general has to pass Tillis's January 6 purity test – and be someone Trump actually wants running his Justice Department.

Those two people do not exist in the same body.

Tillis is not alone.

Every Democrat will vote no on anyone Trump nominates – that is already guaranteed. Republicans hold 53 seats, which means Trump can only lose three votes and still confirm a nominee with Vance breaking the tie. Tillis is one. Lisa Murkowski is another reliable no on anything America First. Mitch McConnell has never made his peace with Trump's second term. Susan Collins – facing re-election in Maine – is not casting a vote her left-wing constituents will punish her for.

That is four senators. Four is one more than Trump can afford to lose.

Names floating for the job include Lee Zeldin, Jeanine Pirro, Eric Schmitt, and Todd Blanche. Ken Paxton spoke at the pro-Trump rally on January 6. Blanche spent years as Trump's personal defense attorney. Every name on the list was chosen because they are loyal to the America First agenda – which is exactly why the old guard wants to eliminate all of them.

This is the play. Tillis and the Republican establishment are not just blocking a nominee. They are trying to force Trump into nominating a Bill Barr type – a credentialed Washington insider who will manage the DOJ the same way it has always been managed, protect the same people it has always protected, and let the deep state exhale.

The establishment does not want the DOJ fixed. They want it managed.

What Happened to the Last Republicans Who Blocked Trump

Adam Kinzinger sat on the Democrats' January 6 select committee and became its most enthusiastic Republican member. He did not seek re-election. He is now a CNN contributor.

Liz Cheney did the same and went further – voted to impeach Trump, chaired the committee, referred him to the Justice Department. Wyoming primaried her and she lost in a landslide. She now does speaking tours for left-wing audiences.

Tillis watched both of them go down and decided none of it applied to him. He voted against Trump's Big Beautiful Bill, Trump threatened a primary challenge, and Tillis announced his retirement the next day – then spent every month since acting like a senator with nothing left to lose.

Because he is one.

Kinzinger and Cheney paid for their choices at the ballot box. Tillis announced his retirement before Trump could collect. No primary. No accountability. Just nine months of runway to cause as much damage as he wants with zero electoral consequences.

John Thune controls committee assignments. He could move Tillis off Judiciary tomorrow — no floor vote required, no lengthy process, just a decision. The man is already leaving. The seat is already gone. There is no political cost to acting.

Every week Thune waits is another week the Justice Department runs without a confirmed attorney general while Tillis sharpens his next objection.

America Is Waiting for an Attorney General and Tillis Is Blocking the Door

You voted for Trump because you wanted the Justice Department cleaned out.

You wanted the two-tiered system ended. You wanted the FBI answering to someone who answers to the American people instead of the permanent Washington class that has run this country into the ground for thirty years.

Thom Tillis – a man his own state's Republican Party censured, a man Trump had to threaten with a primary challenge just to get him to stop blocking the agenda – is now the one person standing between you and that attorney general.

He is not elected anymore. He is not accountable to anyone. He is walking out the door in nine months and he knows it.

And he is spending every minute between now and then making sure the Washington he has always served stays exactly the way he found it.
