Michigan School Banned a Dad for Exposing One Woke Disaster and Now He’s Headed to Court

Grosse Pointe schools plastered a Michigan dad's photo on the wall and told every kid in the building he was a trespasser.

His crime was exposing something the school wanted to hide from parents.

Now he is taking them to federal court – and they handed him the evidence.

A Michigan Dad Filmed Pride Flags in His Kids School and the District Called the Cops

Gary Shane Pruitt attended back-to-school night at Parcells Middle School in Grosse Pointe Woods in September 2024 and saw rainbow and transgender pride flags throughout the building.

He raised the issue with school leadership and was referred up the chain to the school board.

Board member Valarie St. John responded in writing: if Pruitt was concerned about his child seeing rainbow flags, he should send the child to school in tinted sunglasses.

That is what passes for parental engagement in Grosse Pointe.

Pruitt returned after hours with permission from staff, recorded the flags in empty classrooms and hallways, and posted the video to a parent Facebook group on October 14, 2024.

Principal Jason Wesley then emailed all Parcells parents, acknowledging the video contained no threatening content and was political in nature – then announced increased police presence at the school the next morning.

Wesley admitted in writing that Pruitt had done nothing wrong – then called in the cops anyway.

The School Wrote Down Its Own Motive and Now Parental Rights Lawyers Are Coming

Wesley's email is the problem Grosse Pointe cannot explain away.

The district's own principal put it in writing for every parent in the building: the video was not threatening, the speech was political, come to school tomorrow with extra cops.

One week later, Grosse Pointe Police served Pruitt with a no-trespass letter banning him from school property under threat of criminal prosecution.

The school posted his photo in the office, labeling him a trespasser – visible to every parent, student, and staff member who walked through the door.

Pruitt's child was stigmatized, ridiculed, and harassed by other students as a result.

The school punished the kid because the father asked questions.

Pruitt spent more than a year trying to resolve this without a lawsuit.

His attorney, David Kallman, had already sent Grosse Pointe a letter in January 2026 giving the district a chance to walk this back quietly.

The school sat on it for two months before Kallman filed in federal court.

Kallman has seen this play out before.

"School districts have gotten smacked down for doing this over, and over, and over again," Kallman said. "They have no right to retaliate and punish parents for speech that criticizes the school. This is such black-letter law. I don't understand why they feel they can get away with this."

Michigan Schools Push Gender Ideology and Now the DOJ and Parents Are Closing In

Grosse Pointe is not the only Michigan school district with a target on its back.

In February 2026, the DOJ's Civil Rights Division opened investigations into Detroit Public Schools, Lansing School District, and Godfrey-Lee Public Schools for embedding sexual orientation and gender ideology content into required K-12 classes without informing parents of their right to opt out.

Trump's DOJ cited the Supreme Court's 2025 ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which established that government schools cannot expose children to gender ideology instruction without parental consent.

Michigan schools are taking fire from every direction – federal investigators on one side, parents with attorneys on the other.

Superintendent Andrea Tuttle released a statement claiming the district does not restrict access based on protected speech.

Her own principal's email is exhibit one in a federal lawsuit that says otherwise.

Grosse Pointe picked the wrong dad.
