Now the Trump White House has the documents that prove he lied.
What those files reveal about Maricopa County – and the one man who had the authority to tell America – changes everything.
Declassified FBI Documents Reveal Hacker Confessed Then Wiped Hard Drives Before Raid
The breach began October 21, 2020 – thirteen days before Americans voted. A self-described "hobbyist hacker" in Fountain Hills, Arizona discovered a vulnerability in Maricopa County's voter registration website. He wrote a PowerShell script to exploit it.
He ran it for nearly two weeks straight.
By November 2, one day before Election Day, he had extracted 633,000 voter registration files. Among them: 930 records containing sensitive, nonpublic information – domestic abuse victims, judges, law enforcement officers. Names, addresses, birth dates, party affiliations. All of it.
The Maricopa County Recorder's Office reported the intrusion that same day to state counterterrorism authorities. The FBI opened an investigation, traced the breach to a Fountain Hills residence, and executed a search warrant.
They interviewed the suspect. He confessed to everything.
According to an administration official who briefed reporters, the suspect "admitted to all of the conduct involved, including that he noticed the vulnerability for quite some time." He told agents he believed he had extracted between one million and two million voter registration records – far more than the confirmed 633,000.
What he said next explains everything.
He said he knew law enforcement was coming. He "became scared" and "realized the gravity of the situation." So before agents arrived, he wiped his hard drives and deleted every copy from his Google Cloud storage.
The Biden DOJ reviewed the evidence and declined to prosecute.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed in a letter to the White House Government Transparency Task Force that the bureau devoted "significant resources" to building the case. The evidence was complete. The confession was on the record.
Agents presented it to four separate prosecutorial offices.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona – Biden's DOJ – formally declined prosecution on July 12, 2021. The Arizona Attorney General's Office declined. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office declined. The Pinal County Attorney's Office declined.
The FBI requested the case be closed in May 2023 – three years after the breach. The suspect walked free with no charges filed and no public explanation given.
Jeff Clark, former Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division, weighed in after the documents dropped Thursday.
"Standing alone, the Maricopa County, Arizona hack was one of the largest compromises in U.S. history of confidential voter data," Clark said. "Yet the culprit was allowed to get off scot-free."
Clark asked the question that nobody with a badge ever answered: "Was the hacker told he was golden and skate? Is that why he maintained he acted alone? That tends to happen when a target knows they're not going to be prosecuted."

Chris Krebs ran CISA – the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency – during the 2020 election.
Weeks after votes were counted, he went before the American people and declared 2020 "the most secure election in American history." That statement became the official government narrative. The media ran with it. Democrats weaponized it. Republicans who questioned it were called election deniers.
Krebs knew about the Maricopa breach.
U.S. spy agencies logged the Maricopa County scraping as the top cybersecurity incident in their election-period threat tracking – more flagged than any other intrusion in the days surrounding November 3.
And the man responsible for telling America whether the election was secure said nothing.
White House Government Transparency Task Force chairman John Solomon released the documents alongside FBI Director Patel's letter. The breach, Solomon wrote, "highlights the threat President Trump raised – that U.S. intelligence has believed since January 2020 that voter registration data is not well protected."
The declassified files confirm the breach did not alter vote totals – the hacker stole data, he did not change ballots – and Arizona officials have hidden behind that distinction ever since.
The most flagged cyberincident around Election Day involved Maricopa County – the county at the center of every 2020 dispute. The FBI caught the man responsible, got him to confess, and four prosecutors looked at that confession and walked away.
Democrats spent the next six years calling anyone who asked questions an insurrectionist.
Katie Hobbs – then Arizona's Secretary of State, now its governor – certified the results while calling it "easily the smoothest and most secure election in recent history."
Republican members of Maricopa County's Board of Supervisors told Congress it was "the most secure, verified election in our history."
Kash Patel's letter and the declassified documents say otherwise.
The dam, as Jeff Clark put it, "has shattered on the valley floor." Pass the SAVE America Act before America lives through this again.
