China and the United States are engaged in a cold Cold War.
The Chinese Communist Party is willing to do just about anything to become the world hegemon.
Now China is experimenting with nightmarish new surveillance technology.
The gambit of opening up China to free markets has not had the desired effect.
While the country has liberalized in terms of embracing market forces, the country is still totalitarian as ever.
Instead of being a communist country, China has morphed into a quasi-fascist state.
One of the hallmarks of an authoritarian country is mass surveillance, and China is taking it to a frightening level.
China is experimenting with surveillance technology that gauges the emotional state of people, and the software is being tested on the Uyghur Muslims, who have essentially been condemned to slave labor.
The BBC first reported that “a camera system that uses AI and facial recognition intended to reveal states of emotion has been tested on Uyghurs in Xinjiang.”
If someone is exhibiting nervousness or anxiety, they could be perceived as a threat by the CCP.
This is the latest evolution of China’s surveillance apparatus.
China recently created a high-resolution camera that can run facial recognition on a large group of people all at the same time.
China also worked on a project called Dragonfly – with the aid of Google – that would serve as a CCP-approved search engine.
Google backed away from the project amid backlash, but the CCP is undoubtedly working on that project, or something similar.
A software engineer who helped implement the emotion-detecting artificial intelligence told the BBC, “The Chinese government uses Uyghurs as test subjects for various experiments just like rats are used in laboratories, and added that the software was intended for ‘pre-judgement without any credible evidence.’”
China has already implemented a social credit system similar to one that was envisioned in the dystopic anthology series Black Mirror.
Show creator Charlie Brooker said he was no longer writing Black Mirror because society is currently living in an episode.
China’s ideas about liberty – or lack thereof – should not spread.
But unfortunately, elites in western countries are envious of the CCP’s ability to move unilaterally.
Barack Obama once lamented the fact he can’t snap his fingers and make things happen like the CCP can.
As is the case with so many members of the Left, liberty is a pesky thing.
