Biden's DOJ spent four years using the Civil Rights Division to push DEI and protect illegal voters.
Then Harmeet Dhillon walked in, told those lawyers exactly what the new priorities were, and waited.
What three hundred of them did next is something Dhillon had a very specific name for.
How Dhillon Purged the DOJ Civil Rights Division of DEI Lawyers
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon arrived at the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division with a simple message: the job had changed.
The division – among the largest legal operations inside Main Justice – had operated for years as a leftist enforcement arm dressed in civil-rights clothing.
Under Biden, it protected transgender inmates, shielded cities from police accountability, and fought every state attempt to clean dirty voter rolls.
Dhillon told the division's roughly 400 attorneys that President Trump had a different plan – implement his executive orders, dismantle DEI, and clean the voter rolls.
About 300 of those attorneys walked out rather than do it – nobody fired them.
Dhillon, speaking with Col. Kurt Schlichter filling in on the Hugh Hewitt Show this week, described exactly what happened.
"When I started, it had about 400 attorneys in it, and when we came in and told the lawyers here that we were going to be implementing the President's executive orders and prioritizing getting rid of DEI and cleaning up voter rolls and, you know, doing some of these important things that the American people voted for, eventually about 300 of those attorneys quit," she said.
Dhillon had a name for it. They had "self-deported."
These are the lawyers who spent years pretending racial discrimination wasn't discrimination – as long as the victims were Asian students, white applicants, or anyone else locked out by DEI quotas. They treated voter roll cleanup as voter suppression. They helped build a system designed to resist accountability, then called it justice.
Dhillon told them the job had changed, and they removed themselves.

The Dirty Voter Rolls 300 DOJ Attorneys Refused to Touch
The numbers those departing attorneys refused to confront are now public.
A DOJ review of 50 to 60 million voter records found more than 300,000 dead people still listed, along with tens of thousands of noncitizens registered to vote in federal elections.
The division has since sued 30 states and Washington, D.C., demanding voter data that state officials stonewalled for years. Sixteen states cooperated voluntarily; twenty-nine got lawsuits.
Dhillon sent criminal prosecution warnings to election officials in all 50 states: knowingly allowing a noncitizen to cast a ballot in a federal election is a federal crime, and the DOJ intends to pursue it.
She dispatched election monitors to 15 jurisdictions across six states – Arizona, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Virginia – ahead of the 2026 midterm primaries.
The old division spent years arguing that cleaning voter rolls was itself a civil-rights violation and would have never opened any of these cases.
New DOJ Team Targets Voter Rolls and Election Integrity Before 2026 Midterms
After 300 attorneys walked out, Dhillon rebuilt.
"We then had the task of, while we had DOJ restrictions and budgetary constraints, building back the Civil Rights Division," she said. "And I'm really happy to say that I recruited over 100 great legal professionals here to the DOJ."
She swore them in on July 8 – a ceremony her deputy compared to stonemasons building a cathedral.
The rebuilt division is now pursuing university discrimination cases, campus antisemitism, religious-liberty violations, and prosecutions of activists who blockaded churches in Minnesota.
DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels confirmed the division "remains dedicated to protecting the rights of all Americans" and is actively recruiting 100 more attorneys.
The Civil Rights Division had not been protecting civil rights – it had been protecting the Democrat machine that captured it.
300 lawyers confirmed that the moment Dhillon told them the job had changed. She didn't have to fire a single one; she told them the truth, and they fired themselves.
Democrats spent years making sure this division would never touch their voter rolls – and they just lost that protection five weeks before the midterms.
