Fergie Chambers Arrest Exposes How Cox Fortune Became Hamas Financing
James "Fergie" Cox Chambers Jr. inherited a share of one of America's most profitable media empires – the $27 billion Cox cable dynasty that millions of American households paid into for decades.
In 2023, he cashed out his stake for an estimated $250 million.
He then converted to Islam, relocated to Tunisia, and pledged that fortune to what he called "revolutionary organizing."
After October 7, 2023, Chambers called Hamas's massacre of 1,200 Israeli civilians "a moment of hope and inspiration."
Chambers became one of the primary financial backers of Palestine Action US – later rebranded as Unity of Fields – funding bail money and legal defense networks for arrested activists.
He bankrolled direct-action campaigns targeting Elbit Systems, an Israeli-linked defense contractor with facilities in New Hampshire and across the United Kingdom.
Federal prosecutors allege he transferred approximately $7.5 million out of the United States after fleeing the country, with the intent to provide material support to Hamas.
The sealed federal indictment charges him with international money laundering, riot, and conspiracy to riot.
His family says the combined counts expose him to 30 years in federal prison.
Fergie Chambers Extradition Hearing Began While He Was Vacationing in Ibiza
Chambers had been photographed in Tunisia in February 2024.
By May 2026, social media posts placed him in Ireland.
This month, he turned up in Ibiza – vacationing on a Mediterranean resort island – while Spanish police were executing the U.S. arrest warrant.
On July 10, seven plainclothes officers boxed in his car in Ibiza's Morna Valley.
He has been held at the Centro Penitenciario de Ibiza ever since, refused bail and cut off from outside communication.
Spain's Audiencia Nacional – the court that handles all incoming extradition requests – held a hearing July 16 to review the U.S. demand.
No ruling has been made public.
His allies organized a "Free Fergie" protest outside the prison and plastered social media with material denouncing Trump's fascism.
Pro-Hamas activist Laith Marouf – who opposes the extradition but refuses to join those demanding Chambers's release – offered a more candid assessment.
He warned that if Spain refuses to extradite Chambers, the outcome will only give the multimillionaire more "street cred" inside the radical Left's influence networks.
"He basically bought all the landscape of progressive media and is funding all of them," Marouf said.
Marouf has described Chambers as "the new Soros" – positioned to buy credibility and capture left-wing English-language media globally.
Rubio Called Hamas Financing a Transnational Threat the Same Day Spain Reviewed the Chambers Case
Chambers's arrest and Spain's extradition hearing landed on the same day Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened delegations from 65 countries at the State Department for the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism.
Rubio told the assembled nations that radical left-wing terrorism has gone ignored by the international community for too long.
"You're here because your political leaders are being attacked and stabbed and shot in your streets," he told the delegations. "Because your businesses have been bombed. Because your railways have been sabotaged. Because your police officers have been beaten and burned."
The State Department's backgrounder noted that between 1970 and 1980, far-left terrorists were responsible for 93% of all terrorist attacks and 58% of terrorism-related deaths in the West – and the Trump administration says the money never stopped flowing, it just found new benefactors.
The Treasury Department committed at the same event to pursuing terrorist financing across international jurisdictions – regardless of where the money moves or where the subject vacations.
Chambers is not alone in the Justice Department's crosshairs.
DOJ is already running a grand jury investigation into Neville Roy Singham, the American tech tycoon accused of financing communist organizations from Shanghai.
It is currently prosecuting the Southern Poverty Law Center on money laundering, bank fraud, and wire fraud charges.
Trump's DOJ has a simple strategy: find the money, follow it across borders, and make the financiers answer for what it bought.
Fergie Chambers thought $250 million and a Spanish island were enough distance between himself and accountability.
The FBI disagrees.
