Washington Democrats just ran the same playbook they used to gut law enforcement in 2020.
This time the target is not the budget.
What they built — and who they are already moving to remove — is the story nobody in Olympia wants you to connect.
Washington State SB 5068 Opens the Badge to Illegal Aliens
Senate Bill 5068 does not tinker around the edges.
It removes the longstanding requirement that law enforcement officers, deputy prosecutors, and firefighters be American citizens or lawful permanent residents.
Asylum seekers, temporary visa holders, refugees with no permanent legal status, and illegal aliens can now apply to carry a gun, make arrests, and take away the constitutional rights of American citizens.
The bill cleared the Washington State Legislature and is on the desk of Democrat Governor Bob Ferguson, where he is expected to sign it.
Democrats say the bill solves a staffing shortage. The same Democrats who spent 2020 screaming "defund the police" until officers quit in waves across the state created that shortage. They burned the house down. Now they want illegal aliens to guard the ashes.
Rep. Brian Burnett warned that opening law enforcement positions to foreign nationals could mean unknowingly hiring someone with terrorist or criminal connections. "That is a reality of the world we live in," he said. He was overruled.
The Sheriff Who Cleared CHOP Refused to Hire Illegal Alien Officers
Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank is not a man who backs down.
He spent 33 years at the Seattle Police Department, rose to captain, and came out of retirement to run Pierce County on a law and order platform. He won and took office in January 2025.
When SB 5068 cleared the State Senate, Swank went straight to X.
"SB 5068 allows police agencies to hire non-citizens to be police officers and deputies," he wrote. "This means that non-citizens will be able to take away the rights – detain, arrest, shoot, kill – of citizens."
He drew the hard line immediately.
"The Pierce County Sheriff's Office will not be hiring non-citizens under my watch."
Swank told The Post Millennial that the bill crosses a bright red line. "In law enforcement, we arrest people. We take away their constitutional rights. We lock them up in jail."
Foreign nationals who have not sworn an oath to this country should not have that power over American citizens – and illegal aliens should never carry a badge at all.
Democrats Moved to Decertify and Remove the Elected Sheriff Who Said No
While SB 5068 was moving through the legislature, Washington Democrats were simultaneously pushing Senate Bill 5974 – legislation that would give an unelected state board the power to decertify and remove elected sheriffs from office.
Elected sheriffs answer to voters. Appointed ones answer to whoever controls the commission. In Washington, that means Democrat politicians.
The bill passed the Senate on a party-line 30-19 vote – no Republican support – and cleared the House. It is also headed to Governor Ferguson.
Swank showed up at the January 15 Senate hearing to testify against it. He got 90 seconds.
"Citizens reach out to me all the time regarding overreach of the government – by you," he told lawmakers. He challenged their authority to impose controls over his elected office. Then he added the line that has since been viewed over five million times online:
"When you try to remove me from office, thousands of Pierce County residents will surround the County-City Building in downtown Tacoma and will not allow that to happen. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I and they are prepared. Are you prepared?"
Democrats called it threatening. The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs – the same organization that endorsed SB 5068 and helped get GOP senators to vote for illegal alien police officers – began proceedings to expel Swank from its membership.
Swank is unapologetic. "My only regret is that I only had 90 seconds instead of three minutes."
Two Bills One Strategy: Illegal Alien Cops and No Sheriffs to Stop Them
The sequence is not coincidence.
Defund the police, create a staffing crisis, import illegal aliens to fill the gap, then eliminate the elected sheriffs who refuse to comply.
Replace them with commission-appointed administrators who will execute whatever Democrat prosecutors and bureaucrats demand. Only King County – Seattle's home – currently has an appointed sheriff. Democrats made that change in 2020. They are trying to make it statewide now.
Sen. Chris Gildon put it plainly: "If voters hire the sheriff, voters ought to be able to fire the sheriff, not a commission in Olympia."
He is right. But right does not win in a legislature that votes 30-19 on party lines.
Keith Swank is standing on his oath in a state that just passed two bills designed to neutralize sheriffs exactly like him.
Illegal aliens will now be legally authorized to police American citizens in Washington. The sheriff who said no is facing a decertification process run by a commission appointed by the same governor who will sign the bill he opposed.
That is not a coincidence. That is a plan.
