On July 13, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot Donald Trump in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Crooks remains a mystery, as he supposedly had virtually zero social media presence, his family is not saying much, and the media are not asking much.
Just over two months later, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh lay in wait for Trump at a golf club in Florida with a rifle, a scope, and a GoPro camera.
And Routh’s past has already opened a can of worms.
Last year, The New York Times interviewed Routh because he was obsessed with helping Ukraine in the war against Russia.
He even tried to recruit Afghan soldiers to fly to Ukraine and fight in the war.
The Times reported, “Last year I was working on an article about foreign fighters and volunteers in Ukraine. The piece focused on people who were not qualified to be allowed anywhere near the battlefield in a U.S.-led war and yet were fighting on the front against Russia, with access to weapons and military equipment. Among the people I interviewed: Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old man whom the F.B.I. is investigating in what it is calling an assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump on Sunday.”
The media have acted as if Routh’s motive was unknown, but he repeatedly expressed his allegiance to Ukraine and denounced Trump as a threat to the United States.
Routh wrote to Joe Biden on social media in April 2024, “Your campaign should be called something like KADAF. Keep America Democratic and free. Trumps should be MASA … make American slaves again master. DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose. We cannot afford to fail. The world is counting on us to show the way.”
Trump has pledged to broker an end to the war in Ukraine, so it’s understandable why Routh would try to take out Trump if he thought Trump was making concessions to Russia.
The Times continued, “Mr. Routh, who had spent some time in Ukraine trying to raise support for the war, was seeking recruits from among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban. And so the former Afghan soldier reckoned Mr. Routh could get him to the Ukrainian front. (Anything, even war, was better than the conditions in Iran for Afghans after the Taliban retook Kabul in August of 2021.)”
The Routh assassination attempt is particularly bad for the Democrats because it not only exposes how his brain was broken by regime media propaganda, but it also reminded people of the Biden-Harris administration’s failure in Afghanistan.
Biden assured Americans that the Afghan army would be able to stave off the Taliban, but the military folded in one day.
Known by the Deep State
Routh had been flagged by the FBI because a tipster alerted the bureau that he had a firearm despite being a convicted felon.
However, nothing came of it.
A nurse who was working in Ukraine also noted that Routh was bad news after her encounters with him.
The Wall Street Journal reported that “Chelsea Walsh, a nurse who had several encounters with Routh in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2022, said his threats of violence worried her so much that she conveyed her concerns to a Customs and Border Protection officer in an hourlong interview at Washington’s Dulles airport in June 2022. Walsh told the officer during the interview, which took place after she returned to the U.S., that Routh was among the most dangerous Americans she met during her month-and-a-half-long stint in Ukraine.”
Walsh compiled a list of people with “Overall Predatory Behavior (or antisocial traits),” and Routh’s name was at the top of the list.
So U.S. intelligence knew that Routh was bad news, he had foreign connections, he had guns, but somehow he was completely off the radar and was free to take a shot at Trump.
There is zero excuse for the Secret Service not to beef up Trump’s protection.
