Letitia James has been one of Donald Trump’s fiercest legal antagonists.
But now the New York Attorney General is in serious legal trouble of her own.
And Jonathan Turley exposed Letitia James’ breathtaking hypocrisy as news of looming potential arrest has Trump supporters cheering.
Federal investigators target New York’s top prosecutor
Federal authorities launched a criminal investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James over allegations she falsified mortgage documents.
Now she’s using the exact same defense arguments she once denied to former President Donald Trump, according to prominent constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley.
During a Fox Business appearance on “The Evening Edit,” Turley couldn’t help but point out the stunning double standard on display.
“So the karma is crushing here. But the greatest irony, of course, is to hear her counsel and her spokesperson say ‘This is just wrong because Trump campaigned on moving against his enemies,'” Turley told host Elizabeth MacDonald.
“For those of us who have covered this litigation for years, having those words come out of the mouths of James’ staff really is breathtaking,” he continued.
Turley reminded viewers that James ran for office on an explicit promise to target Trump by any means necessary.
“She campaigned on a promise to bag Donald Trump on something. She didn’t even bother to name what it was. She literally campaigned on the promise that she would nail him on anything, and then she filled in the violation later,” Turley explained.
The George Washington University law professor pointed out that James’ legal team is now making exactly the kind of arguments she never allowed Trump to make.
“The James defense team is saying that there were contradictions that were corrected, that, for example, that home was the primary residence of the other signatory. But there are contradictions here,” Turley said.
This represents a complete reversal of the standards James applied to Trump in her civil fraud case.
“It’s an ironic defense because they’re saying, ‘Look, if the bank simply looked into this on their own, they could see that these were more units than just for, that this was not the primary residence of James,'” Turley explained.
The legal expert emphasized that James is now seeking understanding and leniency she aggressively denied to Trump.
“That’s a type of understanding and leeway that she refused to allow to Donald Trump. She insisted that everything that was signed in her name, and it was signed in his name, I should say, really are bound legally to him,” Turley said.
“And so they said you have an obligation to make sure everything filed was absolutely accurate.”
James caught in her own legal trap after reporters expose mortgage scandal
The allegations against James stem from mortgage filings she submitted that reportedly contained false information about her residences.
Daily Caller News Foundation reporters Nick Pope and Myles Morrell broke the story after visiting the properties in question. Their on-the-ground reporting uncovered details that directly contradicted James’ official claims about who actually lived at these residences.
This investigation comes as particularly embarrassing for James, who has built her political career on targeting Trump. During her 2018 campaign, she explicitly pledged to investigate the former president.
In 2022, James filed a lawsuit alleging Trump inflated the value of his properties to obtain loans, which resulted in a staggering $450 million judgment earlier this year.
Just last week, James announced yet another lawsuit against Trump, this time accusing his administration of deliberately cutting funds to the Department of Health and Human Services.
The New York Attorney General now finds herself in the uncomfortable position of facing the same type of legal scrutiny she has imposed on others, particularly Trump.
The federal investigation continues as observers note the striking parallel between the allegations James faces and the charges she brought against Trump.
