French police arrested the founder of free speech messaging app
Telegram is a social media and messaging app that has an estimated 900 million users globally.
But the app has come under fire from governments around the world for its refusal to censor content or cooperate with government demands.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested at a French airport for being complicit in alleged illegal activities that took place on his app like drug trafficking, refusing to cooperate with data requests from law enforcement, and other charges.
Durov fled his native Russia to live in the United Arab Emirates after the country asked him to hand over user data.
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, the star witness at former President Donald Trump’s first sham impeachment trial, discussed the broader implications of Durov’s arrest on Fox & Friends.
Co-host Ainsley Earhardt noted there are concerns the arrest could affect free speech in the European Union.
“So, the authorities say the app was being used for organized crime, drug trafficking, fraud, cyber bullying, and promotion of terrorism. Despite all of that, you’re still against his arrest. Why?” Earhardt asked Turley.
“I am,” Turley replied. “People need to realize what’s really going on here.”
He explained that European Union laws that require social media companies to censor user content were likely behind his arrest.
Europe is building a global censorship regime
Turley called the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) “one of the greatest threats to free speech that we have today around the world.”
European Commissioner for International Markets Thierry Breton threatened X owner Elon Musk if he didn’t comply with the DSA before his interview with Trump.
“And this is a global effort to control speech, and so — it’s hard to be sympathetic with some Russian billionaire, right? That’s not exactly somebody that you rally to the park to defend. But he’s being charged with misconduct of others using his site,” Turley said about Durov’s arrest. “It’s like arresting AT&T’s CEO because the mob used a telephone to do its business.”
Hillary Clinton celebrated the passage of the DSA in 2022 during the same month that Musk purchased Twitter.

“And the question for American citizens is whether we’re going to allow these global censors to basically control speech from Europe. Free speech is in a free fall in Europe,” Turley explained. “It was no accident when Elon Musk bought Twitter, figures like Hillary Clinton almost immediately went to Europe and called on them to use the DSA. Consider that. To use the DSA to censor American citizens. That’s a former Presidential candidate calling for censorship through these officials.”
The Left wants to get around the Constitution by trying to outsource their censorship against Americans to Europe.
