According to a Washington Examiner investigation by Robert Schmad, Google News regularly features and distributes articles from three Chinese state-controlled media organizations that function as propaganda tools for the Chinese Communist Party.
The outlets include the People’s Daily, which is the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, and China Global Television Network (CGTN).
The Justice Department has officially designated both outlets as foreign missions working to promote China’s interests and influence operations within the United States.
Google News also presents American readers with articles from China Daily, an outlet run by the Central Propaganda Department of the Chinese Communist Party.
But Google doesn’t just make this propaganda available – it directly recommends it to American users.
When the Washington Examiner reporter accessed Google News without entering any search terms, he was automatically recommended an article published by CGTN that criticized U.S. tariff policies.
This means Google’s algorithm is specifically designed to feed Chinese Communist propaganda directly to American citizens browsing for news.
Google banned Russian media but protects Chinese propaganda
The hypocrisy becomes even more glaring when you consider Google’s selective enforcement of its own policies.
In 2022, Google moved quickly to ban content from Russian state media outlets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
This shows Google clearly has the ability and precedent to block adversarial state-run news when it wants to.
But when it comes to Communist China – America’s greatest strategic rival – Google apparently has no problem serving as a distribution platform for their propaganda operations.
A Google spokesperson tried to defend the company’s actions, alleging that, "Google actively works to combat coordinated influence and censorship operations while also protecting access to information and free expression online."
The spokesperson claimed Google News "does not allow sources that misrepresent themselves with regard to their ownership."
But this defense falls apart when you consider that these Chinese outlets don’t hide their Communist Party connections – they openly operate as state propaganda arms.

The outlet spread lies accusing Westerners of fabricating stories about the repression of Uyghurs, despite overwhelming evidence of genocide.
Investigations by The New York Times and ProPublica revealed that the People’s Daily participated in organized state propaganda campaigns to deny the Uyghur genocide.
China Daily published a disturbing article that praised the Chinese Communist Party for allegedly saving Uyghur women from becoming "baby-making machines."
Americans deserve better from Big Tech
Google News attracts more than 110 million monthly users according to Press Gazette data.
That means Google is actively exposing millions of Americans to Chinese Communist propaganda on a regular basis.
While Google claims to protect users from "misinformation," the company is literally serving as a distribution network for one of America’s greatest adversaries.
This comes as high-profile Republicans like Senators Ted Cruz and James Lankford have accused Google of suppressing conservative speech.
Missouri’s Republican Attorney General opened an investigation into these censorship claims in October 2024.
The double standard couldn’t be more obvious.
