Ilhan Omar Memoir Admitted She Learned to Lie as a Child and Her Immigration Fraud Case Just Got Worse

Ilhan Omar's staff contacted government officials in 2019 and quietly changed her official birth year from 1981 to 1982.

Now the memoir she wrote to celebrate herself is handing federal investigators exactly what they need.

The book that was supposed to make her untouchable just became the most dangerous document in her fraud case.

Omar Memoir Reveals She Was Taught to Lie About Her Family

Attorney Laura Powell posted the find on X this week.

On pages 20 and 21 of Rep. Ilhan Omar's memoir, This Is What America Looks Like, she describes learning as a child in Somalia to lie about her family and her clan.

She called it needful.

The line was written to win sympathy – a refugee girl doing what survival required.

It's doing something else entirely now.

Federal agents raided Omar's Washington, D.C., home on October 12 as part of a criminal fraud investigation into her family's immigration paperwork. A federal judge signed off on the probe, grand jury subpoenas have gone out to relatives, and investigators have already questioned her sister, Sahra Noor.

And Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed Friday that DHS has presented the Justice Department with a "large case" targeting multiple people.

"This isn't just a case that's targeting one individual," Mullin said.

The Memoir Chapter That Proves Omar Was Born in 1981 Not 1982

The chapter covering Omar's childhood is labeled "War" with a subheading of "1989-1991, Mogadishu, Somalia."

In it, she writes that she was eight years old when civil war broke out.

If she was eight in 1989, she was born in 1981 – not 1982.

That difference is the entire case.

When Omar's father submitted immigration paperwork in 2000, she was listed as 17 – young enough to obtain citizenship as a minor dependent through his application.

Under immigration law, an 18-year-old cannot obtain citizenship that way.

She would have had to file her own citizenship application as an adult.

A 2011 trip to Somalia backs it up – the memoir records her saying she was 30 during that visit, which again points to 1981. The BBC, Swiss outlet Le Temps, and Pakistani news organization Dawn all reported 1981 as her birth date before she ever entered Congress.

The Library of Congress still catalogs her memoir under the subject line "Omar, Ilhan, 1981–."

When a political opponent surfaced the discrepancy in 2019, Omar's congressional staff went to work. They contacted the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library, Wikipedia, and the U.S. House of Representatives website – all requesting the same change, 1981 to 1982.

All of them complied.

Denaturalization Is on the Table as Mullin Moves the Case to a Grand Jury

Mullin said Friday the case is heading to a grand jury.

"We had a judge sign it, and we expect to be able to take the case to a grand jury," he said.

Border czar Tom Homan said the legal remedy is simple: prove the lie, lose the citizenship.

"We can absolutely denaturalize them," Homan said.

Jonathan Turley, one of the country's leading constitutional law experts, said the immigration statutes are unambiguous – if fraud is proven, Omar loses her citizenship.

Vice President JD Vance had already reached his own verdict in March.

"Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America," Vance said.

The centerpiece exhibit is the memoir she wrote to honor herself.

Ilhan Omar spent years building her political identity on that refugee story – Mogadishu girl makes it to Congress. Federal investigators are reading that same book with a highlighter now.

She wrote that she was taught to lie when survival required it. The federal government wants to know whether she brought that habit into an immigration office in the year 2000.

The woman who spent her career calling everyone else a threat to democracy built that career on fraudulent paperwork.

The grand jury will decide.
