Democrat leaders spent $65 million trying to stop their party's socialist takeover – and lost.
Now the socialist movement they couldn't contain just claimed a Senate nomination in a state that decides presidential elections.
What one Democrat leader just called his own party's voters this week started a civil war.
Abdul El-Sayed and the DSA Just Won Michigan's Senate Primary
Abdul El-Sayed just did what the old guard swore couldn't happen outside New York or California.
The far-left candidate – backed by Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – defeated Democrat establishment Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan's Senate primary by roughly 15,000 votes out of 1.5 million cast.
El-Sayed isn't officially a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
He doesn't need to be.
Sanders and AOC campaigned for him across Michigan for months, and the DSA's allied network poured in the turnout infrastructure that pushed him over the finish line.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Stevens in a last-ditch effort to hold the line.
None of it worked.
Michigan wasn't a surprise to anyone who had been paying attention.
Since 2018, more than 300 DSA-backed lawmakers have won their races nationwide.
This cycle, DSA-aligned candidates won congressional primaries in New York – including unseating five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat – then knocked off 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Denver, then swept into the Detroit congressional district the same night El-Sayed claimed the Senate nomination.
The Washington Examiner reported that DSA-backed candidates had won nearly half their races in the 2026 midterms by midsummer.
Republican Mike Rogers – who faces El-Sayed in November – said what conservatives have been watching build for years.
Rogers told Fox & Friends: "This is really about the heart and soul of our country. I have never seen someone so radical, so extreme, get nominated by a political party. The Democrat Party is lost to this hardcore socialist attitude."
Trump went further on Truth Social, calling El-Sayed "a communist loser who hates Jews and Israel" and declaring his nomination "great news" for the Republican Party.
Republicans had privately hoped El-Sayed would win the primary, calculating his far-left positions – including his criticism of Israel and his association with Marxist streamer Hasan Piker – would give Rogers a winning issue set in a general election.
Third Way Declares War on Its Own Party After Democrat Primary Bloodbath
The morning after El-Sayed's win, Third Way president Jonathan Cowan went to the New York Times with a declaration no major Democrat has made in public before.
"We are preparing for the next war that is coming," Cowan said – announcing a $15 million effort through 2028 specifically to "discredit democratic socialism."
Cowan called the DSA a "mortal danger" to the Democrat Party and said it was "deeply troubling to see radical, far-left candidates winning in places that are potentially presidential swing states."
Third Way's Kate deGruyter put it plainly to the Washington Examiner.
"The party cannot be associated with these kind of far-left radical ideas and stances."
Their fear isn't November.
It's 2028.
Moderate Democrats believe a socialist nominee in 2028 means a Republican president in 2029 – and the Michigan result made that nightmare feel real.
In Wisconsin, socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong leads polling in the gubernatorial primary.
Sen. John Fetterman – a man who still caucuses with the people who caused all this – was already sounding the alarm before Tuesday's results.
Fetterman told Fox News Digital he would never elevate "a communist just because [Piker] has followers on Twitch" and said any Democrat who identifies with someone who "praises Mao and Cuba" had abandoned the party's foundation.
James Carville was blunter.
"I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker, I can tell you that right now. If he becomes a force in the Democratic Party, I'm out of here."
The problem for Carville and Fetterman is that nobody asked them.
The socialists aren't joining the Democrat Party – they're replacing it.
And now they have a Senate nominee in a place that’s one of the most important Presidential battleground states.
Trump called it clearly the day before the Michigan primary.
When a reporter asked which Democrat he was rooting for, he said: "You have a communist versus a socialist. That's the way I look at it."
He was right.
And $15 million isn't going to settle it.
