– Chuck Schumer is vowing to block the Republican-led SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to vote, calling it a threat to democracy while critics accuse him of enabling non-citizen voting and undermining election integrity.

– Schumer’s use of the filibuster to stop the bill marks a stark reversal from his past opposition to the filibuster, drawing sharp accusations of hypocrisy from figures like Kyrsten Sinema.

– The SAVE Act, backed by Republicans and some House Democrats, aims to implement voter registration reforms inspired by a Trump executive order, intensifying the partisan battle over election security and voter ID laws.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has thrown down the gauntlet against basic election security.

The longtime Democrat leader is making his most brazen power play yet.

And Chuck Schumer just launched a shockingly racist-sounding attack that left Republicans fuming.

Schumer threatens to block law requiring voters to prove citizenship

The battle over who gets to vote in American elections has reached a boiling point in Washington. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is now openly threatening to use the filibuster to block legislation that would prevent non-citizens from casting ballots in our elections.

Republican Senator Mike Lee’s Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require proof of citizenship during voter registration – a commonsense measure to most Americans. But Schumer has declared war on the bill, promising to use every tool at his disposal to prevent it from passing.

“Trump and Congressional Republicans are escalating their assault on American democracy through the noxious SAVE Act,” Schumer wrote on X. “Congressional Republicans are pushing a proposal that would coerce states into instituting policies that would effectively prevent millions of American citizens from voting, stymie automatic voter registration and derail in-person voter registration drives. It is an outrage.”

Schumer didn’t stop there.

“Let me be clear: Under my leadership, Senate Democrats will block the Republicans’ noxious, election-denying ‘SAVE Act’,” the top Senate Democrat doubled down with a clear threat.

That was sure to get Schumer called out for hypocrisy.

This is the same Chuck Schumer who previously led the charge to eliminate the very filibuster he now plans to use.

Democrats’ shocking reversal on the filibuster

Just three years ago, Schumer was singing a very different tune about the Senate filibuster rule requiring 60 votes to advance legislation.

In January 2022, Schumer wrote a letter vowing to alter the filibuster, calling it an obstacle to “saving” American democracy. He later led 47 Senate Democrats in a vote to end the 60-vote requirement for “voting rights” legislation.

At that time, both former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama referred to the filibuster as a “relic of the Jim Crow Era” that needed to be eliminated.

Now, facing a Republican majority and a bill that would secure our elections, Schumer has suddenly rediscovered his love for the procedural tool.

Former Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, who left the Democrat Party, couldn’t help but mock Schumer’s blatant flip-flop. “Yes dear the hypocrisy is the point,” Sinema wrote on X in response to a user pointing out Senate Democrats’ sudden change of heart on the filibuster.

This marks the fourth time Democrats have used the filibuster to block Republican-backed bills in the current Congress.

What the SAVE Act would actually do

The legislation aims to codify President Donald Trump’s March 25 executive order strengthening voter citizenship requirements.

It would mandate that individuals show “documentary, government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship on voter registration forms” – something most Americans would consider basic common sense.

The bill previously passed the House in July 2024 with a vote of 221 to 198. Five House Democrats even crossed party lines to support the measure, recognizing its importance to election integrity.

Republican Texas Representative Chip Roy, the lead House sponsor, explained the bill’s straightforward purpose: “We’re just saying we’re going to ask people to simply show up and demonstrate their citizenship and so we can ensure that only American citizens vote in American elections,”

House GOP leadership plans to bring the bill to the floor again when the House resumes business this coming week.

Democrats’ war on election integrity

The Democrat opposition to verifying citizenship for voters raises serious questions about their motives.

For years, they’ve pushed policies that make it easier for non-citizens to blend into American society – from sanctuary cities to driver’s licenses for illegal aliens. Now they’re fighting tooth and nail against a simple citizenship check for voters.

The message seems clear: Democrats don’t want barriers between non-citizens and the ballot box.

While they claim the bill would disenfranchise American voters, they fail to explain how asking for proof of citizenship – which is already required for countless everyday activities – would prevent legitimate citizens from voting.

The real issue appears to be that Democrats know tighter election security threatens their political advantage in close races.

A pattern of obstruction

This isn’t the first time Schumer and his allies have worked to block election security measures.

Democrats have consistently opposed voter ID laws, signature verification, and regular cleaning of voter rolls – all basic steps to ensure election integrity.

They’ve labeled such common-sense measures as “voter suppression” while simultaneously making it easier for ineligible individuals to slip through the cracks and cast ballots.

Schumer’s latest threat shows just how far Democrats are willing to go to preserve what many see as vulnerabilities in our election system.

The battle lines are now clearly drawn, with Republicans fighting for citizenship verification and Democrats bizarrely opposing a measure that simply ensures only American citizens vote in American elections.

House Republicans plan to force the issue when they return next week, setting up a showdown that will reveal much about which party truly stands for secure elections.
