Democrats potentially using money laundering technique
Kamala Harris has no shame.
That’s why she ran as the most far-left major party candidate in the 2020 Democrat Primary, but now she’s trying to convince everyone she’s a moderate.
Harris has had to reverse all of her positions quietly through anonymous campaign staffers.
She even tried to portray herself as a border hawk in a campaign ad where she toured Donald Trump’s border walls.
But that’s just one layer of deception.
Republicans are investigating whether or not the Democrats are using a tactic called “Smurfing” in order to skirt campaign finance laws.
Smurfing occurs when large donations are broken up into smaller donations so as not to run afoul of FEC laws.
Peter Schweizer and Eric Eggers of the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) discussed the issue on their podcast, The Drill Down.
Eggers said, “Smurfing is a money laundering technique, correct? It’s identity theft. . .and it’s a money laundering technique. And it’s actually something that we identified as a vulnerability in American elections, in terms of funding American elections. Back in 2012, one of the first things we did at the Government Accountability Institute. . .was a report on something called Obama.com. . .[T]hat essentially highlighted how foreign money could be entering American campaigns, which is a violation of the law, because credit card companies on these portals like ActBlue don’t require credit card verification, like those three or four digits that you would have to do for almost any other transaction.”
Schweizer added, “That’s right. If you want to buy a pair of socks on Amazon, you have to give that security code on the back of the credit card. Obama.com did not require it. And the vast majority of political campaigns, Republican and Democrat, don’t require it, either.”
As Schweizer explained, Win Red, the Republican equivalent to Act Blue, does not require the security code, but Democrats have broken the technique down to a science.
Investigations in swing states have shown retirees on modest pensions donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to ActBlue.
When the investigative journalists asked them about it, they had no idea their names were being used.
Schweizer continued, “The problem is this is where the Smurfing and the allegations of these illegal donations being made through these portables is if you don’t have that security system on, you’re not actually matching the credit card number. Or you can use a gift card, right? You could get a $1,000 gift card and break up a bunch of donations. You don’t actually know if that credit card corresponds to the person who you are saying is making the donation. In other words, I could take your credit card number, not even have the security code, because they don’t require it, and I could put donations in my name or in our producer’s name, give it to a bunch of different candidates in small amounts, so it’s very hard to trace, and nobody knows the source of that money, that it actually came from.”
GOP investigating
Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) has called on the FEC to look into suspicious funding mechanisms that the Democrats are using.
Tenney, who co-chairs the House Election Integrity Caucus, and her colleagues wrote in a letter to the FEC to investigate “significant public reporting on anomalous transaction activity involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Tenney claimed that “numerous individuals have allegedly donated to ActBlue thousands of times annually” but “it was reported many of these individuals were unaware their names and addresses were being used to make thousands of dollars in political donations.”
There’s a reason why Democrats fight tooth and nail to block election integrity efforts.
They have perfected their machine operations in big cities.
