Bill Maher found himself in the middle of a Hollywood firestorm this week.
His fellow celebrities turned on him with blistering fury.
And Hollywood celebrities erupted in rage after Bill Maher said these twelve words about Donald Trump.
Bill Maher delivers shocking assessment of Trump after White House dinner
Liberal comedian Bill Maher has built his career on biting political commentary that often takes aim at both sides of the aisle.
But the HBO host crossed a line with his Hollywood peers when he recently had dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump and later shared his surprisingly positive impressions of the meeting.
During his show last Friday, Maher finally revealed details about the much-anticipated dinner, dropping twelve words that sent shockwaves through Hollywood: “Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent.”
The bombshell assessment came as Maher described a version of Trump that contradicted the image many celebrities have spent years cultivating.
“He’s much more self-aware than he lets on in public,” Maher explained. “Look, I get it, it doesn’t matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian, it matters who he is on the world stage.”
Maher went even further, suggesting Trump was more comfortable to be around than previous Democratic Presidents.
“I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And, honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,” Maher admitted.
The HBO host then delivered a stinging critique of the Democratic Party, saying, “That’s just how it went down, make of it what you will. Me, I feel it’s emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days.”
Hollywood Left unleashes furious backlash
The reaction from Hollywood celebrities was swift and merciless.
Keith Olbermann, former MSNBC host known for his dramatic anti-Trump commentary, unleashed a personal attack questioning Maher’s integrity.
“Don’t overanalyze Maher prostituting himself to Trump. Maher works for the same fascists at Warner who took over and corrupted CNN,” Olbermann raged on X. “I’ve known Bill since 1978. He was a shameless opportunist with no real principles then and he remains so. This is so he can keep his HBO show.”

Producer Andy Ostroy attacked Maher for his privilege, suggesting the comedian couldn’t understand the real threat Trump poses.
“Here’s what Maher is not: a person of color, a woman, gay, trans, an immigrant, Muslim, on Social Security & Medicare/Medicaid, disabled, the working class. So it’s no wonder he can jet to the WH & find Trump so f***ing ‘charming’ & ‘real’. Sickening…” Ostroy posted on X.

Actor Patton Oswalt mockingly compared the situation to Star Wars, posting a screenshot from The Empire Strikes Back with the caption: “Darth Vader being ‘gracious’ and ‘not fake.’ Everything we’ve ever not liked about him is absent in this scene.”
Hollywood star John Cusack didn’t mince words, comparing Trump to Nazi officers while questioning Maher’s judgment.
“Plenty of sociopaths can be gracious over dinner – I’m sure some SS members were very gentlemanly at cocktail parties – bill / What a fool,” Cusack wrote on Blue Sky.
Maher casts doubt on Democrat’s strategy
The ferocious backlash against Maher highlights the deep divide within the Democrat Party over how to approach President Trump during his second term.
While many Hollywood elites want to maintain a “resistance” stance, refusing any normalization of Trump’s presidency, others like Maher appear to be testing a more nuanced approach.
Maher’s surprising assessment comes as President Trump works to build bipartisan relationships in Washington, meeting with various figures from across the political spectrum.
For Hollywood celebrities who built their personal brands on resistance to Trump during his first term, Maher’s olive branch represents an existential threat to their political identity.
The vicious reaction demonstrates how little tolerance remains for those who deviate from the approved anti-Trump messaging, even when they come from solidly liberal circles.
Maher, who built his reputation on free speech and challenging orthodoxy, now finds himself the target of the same cancel culture he has frequently criticized.
