President Donald Trump has been moving at breakneck speed to enact his agenda.
That’s left Democrats struggling to find a target to focus on and a message.
Democrats have turned back to their old playbook of hysteria and fearmongering against Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
Veteran political journalist Mark Halperin claimed that historians would look back on the first month of Trump’s second term and be mystified at the Democrats’ terrible efforts to oppose him during an appearance on Newsmax’s Wake Up America.
Halperin pointed to a segment on ABC’s The View where co-host Joy Behar claimed without evidence that Musk supported apartheid as a child in South Africa.
He argued that this was symbolic of the Democrat strategy to use name-calling and personal attacks over providing a competing vision to voters.
“I think when historians write about this first month of the Trump administration, they’re going to be bewildered by just the rank inability of the opposition to figure out how to talk about what’s going on,” Halperin said. “And you saw there in sharp relief … just making claims about Elon Musk that have really nothing to do with the real lives of real people in America. But also just riffing on things that — just hard to know where she was headed.”
Behar was forced to backtrack on her bogus claim about Musk after a commercial break.
Democrats are divided and flailing trying to counter Donald Trump
Halperin said Democrats have been “discombobulated” since Trump’s victory in November.
The party has no message and has been split on how to respond to Trump.
“I’m not a medical professional and I generally urge people not to try to make diagnoses over Google, but this one, I don’t think even requires a Google search,” Halperin said. “They’re discombobulated by Elon Musk because of his power and influence and how quickly he’s moving.”
Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been auditing the federal government for waste, fraud, and abuse.
Democrats began ramping up their attacks on Musk after he exposed the woke spending at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
That left the party in the position of defending government waste and foreign aid.
Two things that are deeply unpopular with voters.
“And I think most smart Democratic strategists say, ‘Stop attacking the man and focus on the ideas and the impact some of his moves are making,’ but they just don’t seem to be able to resist going after him personally,” Halperin stated.
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo admitted that Democrats haven’t learned anything from the 2024 Election on his show.
“It seems like anything that Trump or Musk does, they have to condemn, and they have to condemn it on the basis of the people personally,” Cuomo stated. “Trump is a Nazi. Musk has apartheid roots. And to me, it just proves they haven’t learned their lesson yet, that they should be in the better idea business.”
Democrats are hoping that mud-slinging brings them back to relevance as a party.
