Donald Trump isn’t playing around when it comes to border security.
He’s not trying to make any friends in the Swamp.
And Donald Trump issued one military order at the border that sent Democrats into a frenzy.
Military begins surveillance operation at the Southern Border
President Donald Trump declared the Southern Border a national emergency and deployed more than 10,000 active duty troops there to help with border security.
Border Patrol data revealed that illegal crossings at the Southern Border are down 94% since Trump took office.
The Trump administration isn’t resting on its laurels.
Soldiers deployed to the Southern Border are going to be stepping up their efforts to stop illegal immigration.
Troops will use Stryker armored fighting vehicles that have long range sensors and use night vision to keep open spaces at the border under surveillance, defense officials told Politico.
Foot patrols by soldiers will also begin in these areas.
The advanced surveillance gear used by the military will help spot illegal border crossings.
Air Force General Gregory Guillot, head of U.S. Northern Command, will oversee the military’s border security mission.
Soldiers will be working hand in hand with the Border Patrol on these surveillance operations.
“The authority to transport [Customs and Border Protection] personnel during patrols means law enforcement personnel will be on-hand or nearby to conduct any necessary law enforcement activity,” Guillot said.
Soldiers are prohibited by law from conducting law enforcement duties or detaining civilians.
Army Major Jared Stefani said soldiers would be providing support to the Border Patrol but noted they were ready to defend themselves.
“With our standard rules for the use of force, soldiers do have the right to defend themselves,” Stefani said.
Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Lloyd Easterling said the goal was for the military to deter would-be border crossers.
“Nobody’s going to be hidden, everything will be in plain sight,” Easterling said. “We want people to see where [the troops] are — it’s a method of deterrence.”
Trump considers a buffer zone at the Southern Border
The Trump administration is considering setting up a buffer zone along the border in New Mexico.
A 60-foot buffer would be created at the Southern Border on federal land in the state.
That would make the buffer zone a military installation and give soldiers the ability to stop illegal aliens who cross into it for trespassing.
Soldiers would hold the illegal aliens and then turn them over to the Border Patrol.
“It’s not ‘detention’ because once you go into detention it has the connotations of being detained for arrest. This is holding for civilian law enforcement,” an anonymous defense official told the Washington Post.
The Roosevelt Reservation is a 60-wide strip of land the federal government owns that runs from New Mexico to California that was set aside by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1907 for border security.
A militarized buffer zone could run all the way to California if the test run in New Mexico is successful.
The Southern Border has seen a dramatic improvement in security since Trump took office.
Donald Trump is ready to make sure the border is sealed shut with an increased military presence.
