Democrats were rocked with another nasty election year scandal.
The fallout is starting to tear the party apart.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded a Democrat resign after this shocking crime.
New York City Mayor indicted by federal prosecutors
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) was indicted by federal prosecutors with the Southern District of New York on five charges related to corruption.
Adams was hit with a federal indictment for two counts of soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals, conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud.
The alleged crimes date back to 2014 when he was Brooklyn Borough President.
Adams was accused of ordering the Fire Department of New York to approve a new Turkish consulate building without a fire inspection after receiving travel and other benefits from Turkish officials.
He ordered his staff to cover his paper trail.
“As described above, Adams repeatedly did not disclose the free and heavily discounted travel benefits he accepted from the Turkish Official, the Promoter, and the Airline Manager; created a false paper trail to suggest he had paid for this travel when, in fact, he had not; assured the Adams Staffer that he had a practice of deleting all his messages with the Adams Staffer; and directed the Adams Staffer to ensure that his activities in Turkey in 2021 were shielded from public view,” the indictment stated.
The New York City mayor was also accused of soliciting illegal campaign contributions from wealthy foreign nationals and defrauding the city’s matching campaign contribution program with those donations.
Key figures in New York City government resigned in the weeks leading up to Adam’s indictment including New York Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban and his chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg.
A defiant Adams announced that he wouldn’t resign and vowed to fight the charges.
“I look forward to defending myself and defending the people of this city as I’ve done throughout my entire professional career,” Adams said.
He faces up to 45 years in prison if he’s convicted on all counts.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demands a resignation
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) clashed with Adams dating back to his election in 2021 when she supported one of his challengers.
Adams has slammed her for supporting defunding the police and no cash bail.
Ocasio-Cortez called for the mayor to resign on social media.
“I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X. ”The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening gov function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign.”
A flood of other Democrats began to demand Adams quit.
Biden-Harris administration relation?
Adams became an outspoken critic of the Biden-Harris administration’s border policies after his city was overwhelmed by an influx of illegal aliens.
He hinted in a video he was being targeted for speaking out about illegal immigration.
“I have been fighting injustice my entire life,” Adams said. “That fight has continued as your mayor. Despite our pleas, when the federal government did nothing as its broken immigration policies overloaded our shelter system with no relief, I put the people of New York before party and politics.”
Democrats are dealing with a major corruption scandal in the country’s biggest city in the homestretch of the election.
That is another headache for the party to deal with as it tries to win the White House.
