The United States Supreme Court became the enemy of leftists when Donald Trump flipped the Court’s majority in his first term.
Their rage has only grown worse.
But the Supreme Court just sent shockwaves across the country after making this long awaited decision.
TikTok has a fighting chance after the Supreme Court agrees to take another look at the TikTok ban
This year, the Donald Trump campaign successfully mobilized younger voters by going around the traditional left-wing biases of the mainstream media and utilizing social media platforms like X, podcasts and YouTube, and even TikTok to spread the President-Elect’s message.
Twitter in particular became a lightning rod for leftist hatred following Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform, which he quickly renamed X and lifted the ban on Donald Trump’s account.
But X was far from the only social media platform to get a target on its back in recent years.
TikTok became a target for lawmakers on both sides in Washington, D.C. as well.
In December 2022 Congress passed a bill, which President Joe Biden ultimately signed, that would ban TikTok unless its parent company sold the platform.
The move came after TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, came under fire due to its alleged close ties to the communist Chinese government.
However, TikTok’s supporters say little to no evidence exists proving that the Chinese government has used TikTok in any way that should alarm its users.
Nonetheless, barring a legal ruling in its favor, TikTok could go offline on January 19.
If not, ByteDance will be forced to sell TikTok or go dark.
But the United States Supreme Court has agreed to listen to arguments relating to the law passed by Congress that would ban TikTok next month unless it’s sold.
TikTok spokesman Michael Hughes reacted to this decision from the Supreme Court, telling the press, “We believe the Court will find the TikTok ban unconstitutional so the over 170 million Americans on our platform can continue to exercise their free speech rights.”
David Greene, a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, echoed these claims, stating that the government should not have the ability to restrict free speech “without proving with evidence that the tools are presently seriously harmful.”
“But in this case, Congress has required and the DC Circuit approved TikTok’s forced divestiture based only upon fears of future potential harm. This greatly lowers well-established standards for restricting freedom of speech in the U.S.,” Greene added in his statement.
The Supreme Court has the chance to upend the TikTok ban
Founding father Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
This timeless quote rings true today more than ever, with Congress and Joe Biden flatly defying the First Amendment under the guise of making America a bit safer.
Many Americans see TikTok as posing no legitimate threat to their security, and say the attempt to ban TikTok serves as nothing more than another assault on Free Speech.
