Mark Zuckerberg claims Biden administration officials cursed out Facebook demanding censorship
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is trying to undergo a redemption angle ahead of President-elect Donald Trump taking office.
His social media platforms Facebook and Instagram banned Trump and censored conservatives for years.
Zuckerberg poured $400 million of his own money dubbed “Zuckerbucks” to help local election officials operate during the pandemic in 2020 that helped sway the contest to President Joe Biden.
Trump’s victory has the Meta CEO acting like he’s ready to turn over a new leaf.
Zuckerberg announced that he was dialing back censorship on Meta’s social media platforms and getting rid of left-wing “fact-checkers.”
He previously admitted that Facebook and Instagram censored information on behalf of the Biden administration.
The Meta CEO appeared on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast as part of his Goodwill tour.
Zuckerberg went into greater detail about the censorship pressures that Facebook dealt with under Biden.
“Basically, these people from the Biden Administration would call up our team and like scream at them and curse,” Zuckerberg recalled. “And it’s like these documents are — it’s all kind of out there.”
Rogan asked him if any of the phone calls with Biden officials were taped by Facebook.
“I mean, there are emails. The emails are published. It’s all kind of out there,” Zuckerberg explained. “And basically, it just got to this point where we were like, ‘No, we’re not going to — we’re not going to take down things that are true. That’s ridiculous.’”
The Biden administration didn’t like memes
Zuckerberg recalled a meme featuring Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in the movie Once Upon a Time Hollywood pointing at a TV that sent Biden officials into a frenzy.
“They wanted us to take down this meme of Leonardo DiCaprio looking at a TV, talking about how ten years from now or something, you’re going to see an ad that says, ‘Okay, if you took a COVID vaccine, you’re eligible, like for this kind of payment,’ like this sort of like class-action lawsuit-type meme. And they’re like, ‘No, you have to take that down,’” Zuckerberg stated.
He claimed that eventually the censorship requests from the administration were ignored.
“Then at some point, I guess — I don’t know — it flipped a bit,” Zuckerberg said. “I mean, Biden, when he was — he gave some statement at some point, I don’t know if it was a press conference or to some journalist, where he basically was like, ‘These guys are killing people.’ And I don’t know. Then like all these different agencies and branches of government basically just like started investigating and coming after our company. It was brutal.”
Zuckerberg apologized for the censorship in a letter to House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) last year.
The Meta CEO is trying to say all the right things with Trump returning to the White House but it remains to be seen whether he’s serious or he knows which way the political winds are blowing in Washington, D.C.
