Joe Biden releases suspected Al Qaeda members from Guantanamo Bay
Democrats have wanted to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since it was opened under former President George W. Bush.
Former President Barack Obama vowed to close but never did.
The Obama administration released 122 prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, including many who returned to the battlefield after their release.
121 of the 714 prisoners were released from the prison
President Joe Biden continued Obama’s work of freeing terrorists from the military prison.
His administration secretly released 11 suspected members of Al Qaeda from Guantanamo Bay.
The 11 Yemeni nationals were held at the prison but never had charges brought against them.
A deal was struck with the government of the Middle Eastern nation of Oman to take the prisoners and watch them.
“The United States appreciates the willingness of the government of Oman and other partners to support ongoing U.S. efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility,” the Defense Department said in a statement.
Defense Department officials claimed that releasing the prisoners would be consistent with national security policies.
A transfer of the prisoners was supposed to happen in 2023 but was delayed after the conflict between Israel and Hamas broke out following the October 7 terrorist attacks.
Alleged bodyguard for Osama Bin Laden freed by Joe Biden
Two of the prisoners released, Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi and Suhayl Abdul Anam al Sharabi, were alleged to be bodyguards for Osama Bin Laden.
An intelligence report claimed that al Sharabi “may have been associated with an aborted 9/11-style hijacking plot in Southwest Asia.”
Another report about al-Alwi said that his “extremist” mindset hasn’t changed while he’s been detained and received infractions for his behavior.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) slammed Biden for the secret release.
“It is utterly shameful that today the Biden administration released 11 Yemeni terrorists from Guantanamo Bay and sent them back to Oman,” Greene wrote on X. “Releasing Islamic terrorists who would kill every American in the name of their god is a dangerous endorsement of terrorism. It is wrong. It is reckless. And it IS an insult to the memories of those who died on 9/11, every terrorist attack against Americans, victims on Jan 1, 2025, in New Orleans, and our GREAT American military members who died fighting against terrorism.”
This is the latest infuriating release from Biden as he races to empty the prison in his final days in office.
Saudi Arabian-born Majid Khan was freed in the Central American country of Belize in 2023.
Khan was an associate of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who was arrested in Pakistan in 2003.
Only 15 prisoners remain at Guantanamo Bay after the release after it held 800 during its peak.
Who knows what they’ll be spooled up to do after being held without charges for so long.
