Hollywood is facing major challenges.
The least of which is liberal freakouts over Donald Trump.
And one Friends star called out an Oscar-winning director for a shocking reason.
Lisa Kudrow raises questions about artificial intelligence
Hollywood leftists have been obsessing about Donald Trump for eight years.
Meanwhile, show business is in financial straits thanks to reduced box office numbers—partly due to COVID—and streaming distribution models that are not as lucrative as the old models.
Another major disruptor for the film industry is artificial intelligence, which could eventually put a lot of people out of work, including actors.
Friends star Lisa Kudrow recently criticized director Robert Zemeckis’ new film Here, which uses AI heavily.
Kudrow explained on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, “They shot it, and they could actually shoot the scene and then look at the playback of them as younger, and it’s ready for them to see. And all I got from that was, this is an endorsement for AI and oh, my God. It’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s going to ruin everything,’ but what will be left? Forget actors, what about up-and-coming actors? They’ll just be licensing and recycling.”
A truly dark future would be if stars were simply aged down and recycled as Kudrow suggested.
The Mission: Impossible franchise could be rebooted 30 years from now with Tom Cruise still as the lead.
Kudrow continued, “Set that completely aside, what work will there be for human beings? Then what? There’ll be some kind of living stipend for people, you won’t have to work? How can it possibly be enough?”
The dangers of AI
That has long been a concern with technology.
In the past, technology has created more jobs, not fewer.
Technology allows workers to be more efficient, which allows businesses to grow.
And people displaced by technology find work in another field, which makes the economy as a whole more efficient.
However, AI could potentially be the one technology that is so disruptive that it radically changes society for the worse.
How AI will unfold in the future is an unknown.
Tom Hanks, who stars in Here, previously discussed the potential future of AI.
He said on “The Adam Buxton Podcast” back in 2023, “What is a bona fide possibility right now, if I wanted to, [is] I could get together and pitch a series of seven movies that would star me in them in which I would be 32 years old from now until kingdom come. . .Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age they are by way of AI or deep fake technology … I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but my performances can go on and on and on. . .Outside of the understanding that it’s been done by AI or deepfake, there’ll be nothing to tell you that it’s not me and me alone and it’s going to have some degree of lifelike quality.”
For most people, that type of future sounds truly nightmarish.
