Democrats have been trying to stay united in opposing the Trump administration.
But one issue is becoming a major stumbling block.
And a top Democrat went rogue and sided with Trump’s “Border Czar” in one massage fight.
Chicago Democrat alderman turns on the city’s mayor over deportations
President Donald Trump’s administration hit the ground running on its plan for the mass deportation of illegal aliens.
Trump’s “Border Czar” Tom Homan is targeting illegal aliens who have criminal convictions during the first phase of the operation.
Removing dangerous criminals from communities should be common sense but some Democrat politicians are digging in their heels.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker refused to cooperate with deporting illegal aliens under any circumstances.
Some Democrats in the city want to help Homan get violent illegal aliens out of Chicago.
Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez (D) ripped Pritzker for trying to thwart efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to apprehend and deport illegal aliens who’ve been arrested for violent crimes.
He accused Pritzker of being out of touch with Chicago residents during an appearance on Fox News.
“You know, there’s an incredible disconnect what I hear from our governor, from our mayor, and individuals who live in the communities like the ones that I represent that have high immigration, high immigrant populations,” Lopez said.
Lopez said those dangerous criminals were putting everyone in those communities in danger.
“We understand there’s a difference,” Lopez stated. “We know there’s a difference between those individuals, the anchors that the governor referred to and those that choose to engage in dangerous criminal activity.”
Democrats push to change Chicago’s sanctuary law
Lopez and another Democrat on the Chicago City Council pushed to have the sanctuary law changed to allow law enforcement to hand over illegal aliens arrested for violent crimes to ICE.
He met with Homan about the administration’s efforts to target criminal illegal aliens.
“They endanger the undocumented. They endanger the citizens,” Lopez explained. “They endanger our own people who we should be concerned about, and I know after having met with Tom Homan, that that is exactly the type of individual that he and the Trump administration are zeroing in on. Those that choose to engage in criminal activity.”
Lopez welcomed the Trump administration’s efforts to apprehend and take violent criminals off the streets.
“It’s very ignorant for people to blanketly call all undocumented the same and treat them the same when you know that there are individuals who do not care about this country, do not care about their neighborhoods and are committing some of the most heinous dangerous acts in our city,” Lopez added. “They need to be dealt with very specifically and swiftly and the Trump Administration is doing that in the first week in office.”
Pritzker and Mayor Johnson are more interested in building their political profiles sparring with Trump than keeping their constituents safe.
“We’ve seen many of my colleagues stand up and join my efforts to try to put some common sense back into our sanctuary city laws,” Lopez explained. “We should not be giving sanctuary to sexual predators. We should not be helping those who want to use guns to kill people and have in fact killed people. There’s a common-sense approach by doing both. Sadly, some in my party like my mayor who refuse to get with the program, but I think time will prove us right in the long run.”
The cracks are already forming among Democrats about resisting the deportation of illegal aliens.
