Obama official complains about Trump firing and laying off government workers
President Donald Trump vowed to drain the Swamp on the campaign trail last year.
His administration has been reducing the number of federal workers at a rate not seen in decades.
The Trump administration has fired and laid off federal workers on an almost daily basis since the President took office.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his team Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are auditing the federal government which led to Trump shutting down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) after exposing corrupt and wasteful spending at the agency.
Trump’s attempt to trim the fat in the more than three million employee federal workforce has sparked a furious backlash from Democrats.
The Trump administration has faced dozens of lawsuits from government employee unions over firing and laying off workers.
Fox News contributor Marie Harf – a former Obama State Department official – whined about the government layoffs during a segment on Outnumbered.
Former Trump White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany noted that some federal employees wanted to undermine the President’s agenda from within the government.
“I do think that federal employees fall into three buckets, you have the political appointees, some of whom are thrilled that this is happening, they see this as a revolution in government,” McEnany explained. “Then you have this other pot of hardworking federal government employees, I think they don’t care who the president is, I think they care deeply about their job and that pot does exist, but that is not all federal workers.”
She argued that Trump should be allowed to cut federal employees who wanted to stay “out of spite.”
“There are federal workers that have this attitude, this was an NBC anonymous communication that came to them, I saw this a few weeks ago, a federal employee at the Department of Veterans Affairs, ‘A lot of us are going to stay out of spite,’ they said,” McEnany said.
“‘We’re here for however long we want to be here. I could be here until retirement in 30 years, the Trump Administration is only here for four.’ What’s wrong with trying to root out any employees staying out of spite?” McEnany asked.
Trump is removing the resistance from the federal government
Harf complained that the Trump administration’s firings were illegal and a move politically.
“DOGE isn’t managing these people and at the same time, people across the country can’t pay their mortgages or put food on the table for their kids because they got fired from a job they thought had job security,” Harf said. “That is not electorally or morally a good plan, I think, for Republicans.”
Democrats never had any sympathy for coal miners they put out of a job because of environmental regulations.
Only when it’s government bureaucrats do they care about job losses.
McEnany pointed to a 2017 article from the Washington Post that touted government employees undermining the Trump administration.
“It’s easy to oversimplify and point to some stories of individuals who got termination notices, but the background is this: This is not a Republican newspaper, conservative newspaper, this is ‘the Washington Post’… years ago: ‘Resistance From Within The Federal Government,’” McEnany stated. “Listen to this, less than two weeks into the Trump Administration, federal workers are in regular consultation with recently-departed Obama-era political appointees about what they can do to push back against the new president’s initiatives. There was even a support group that took place about how to resist the Trump Administration.”
Donald Trump learned the lesson of his first term and is working to remove government employees who will oppose his agenda.
