California wants to stop Americans from speeding
The growing amount of technology in vehicles is opening the door for the government’s nanny state to infiltrate them.
Government officials want Americans to slow down to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities from traffic accidents.
It also has the added benefit for the climate change lobby of reducing the amount of fuel drivers use and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
The federal government set the national speed limit at 55 mph in the 1970s to reduce oil consumption during the Arab oil embargo.
Now, the California State Legislature wants to make speeding as annoying as possible for drivers.
SB 961 would require all new vehicles sold in California by 2027 to have an intelligent speed limiter system that prevents drivers from going 10 mph over the posted speed limit.
“Traffic fatalities have risen alarmingly in California and across the nation, with speeding being a significant contributor to this public health crisis,” State Senator Scott Wiener (D-CA), the bill’s sponsor, said.
The system would use the vehicle’s GPS to determine the speed and posted speed limit.
Big Brother comes to the automobile
California has the largest consumer market in the country, and its laws often determine the national standard.
“In effect, the author is attempting to leverage the purchasing power of the state to create a new standard for nationwide industry; something the state has done several times before on subjects like regulating toxic compounds in products or establishing minimum living conditions for animals used to produce food products,” a bill analysis for the State Senate stated.
Automakers would fold to comply with California standards because of market size rather than make one vehicle for the state and another for the rest of the country.
Kamala Harris’ fellow California Democrats want to impose a policy on everyone in America.
The bill passed the State Legislature and is headed to California Governor Gavin Newsom for his signature.
Newsom expressed concern earlier this year that Republicans could use the bill against Democrats in an election year.
Vehicles have turned into giant smartphones because of the amount of technology in them.
90% of new vehicles sold have the ability to not just track location but also when a transmission shifts gears or when the door opens and closes.
Research is inconclusive on whether lowering speed limits reduces fatalities and accidents.
Vehicles are bigger and heavier today, which makes them more dangerous.
The Economist found that a collision with a large pickup truck has a fatality rate that is seven times higher than a small compact car.
The European Union began requiring speed limiters in new cars sold in the economic bloc beginning this year.
