San Francisco lawmakers are doing everything they can to cover up these significant findings
More people than ever use the internet to purchase goods and services of all sorts.
As people purchase these goods and services, the companies they use hold onto their data, which can help these businesses track consumer patterns and adjust prices.
For example, if people in a particular area purchase a large number of snow tires, the tracking of consumer data allows the company to run more advertisements for snow tires or adjust tire prices in that given area.
In many parts of the country, rental agencies use similar methods to determine the average cost of rent, allowing them to adjust rental rates seamlessly.
Lawmakers in San Francisco resent these companies for these actions, as they have allegedly caused rents to go up within their city.
Because of this hostility, the San Francisco City Council banned such practices in a recently approved ordinance.
The ordinance specifically prohibits the use of, “algorithmic devices performing calculations of non-public competitor data concerning local or statewide rents or occupancy levels.”
The act of researching rental prices and adjusting them accordingly has existed for many years, and many have accepted this as a normal practice within the real estate industry.
After all, no property owner wants to charge way less than their competitors.
However, in San Francisco, such practices have become known as price fixing, something that many Democrats such as San Francisco’s own Nancy Pelosi have pledged to eliminate.
Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has echoed these concerns, pledging to take similar action on the federal level.
Many Americans fear that such interference with the free market could force property owners out of the industry for fear of losing money, further expanding America’s housing crisis.
Additionally, many Americans would rather lawmakers focus on the purchasing and obtaining of consumer data by government agencies such as the FBI, who often use this data for nefarious reasons.
Once again, San Francisco has completely missed the mark with their new price-fixing law
Many factors have caused home prices to increase across the nation, including the increase of people, many of which have flooded across the southern border.
Increased building costs, due to skyrocketing costs of materials such as wood and nails, have caused home prices to soar.
Rather than address these issues, lawmakers would rather dismantle the free market, placing the blame on so-called “greedy landlords.”
As a result of these lawmaker’s failure to address these issues properly, many Californians have fled the state, fleeing to places with lower home prices and/or lower rent.
