Trust in the federal government is at an all-time low.
It’s easy to understand why, considering the Biden administration has been such a disaster.
And the Biden administration was just shamed into scrapping one nightmarish plan.
The IRS will no longer use facial recognition software in order to confirm the IDs of people who use the IRS’s online service.
The facial recognition program was being administered through a company called ID.me, but the IRS backed off amid backlash from privacy advocacy groups as well as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement:
“The IRS takes taxpayer privacy and security seriously, and we understand the concerns that have been raised…Everyone should feel comfortable with how their personal information is secured, and we are quickly pursuing short-term options that do not involve facial recognition.”
The battles are heating up over online privacy and free speech on Big Tech platforms.
Many leftists in Washington, D.C. and Silicon Valley are eager to move closer to a Chinese model of mass surveillance and top-down control.
The IRS employing facial recognition software was a bridge too far for many.
ID.me CEO and founder Blake Hall said:
“In recent weeks, we have modified our process so government agencies can empower people to choose to verify their identity with an expert human agent without going through a selfie check. Agencies can now select this configuration.”
The news about the IRS comes amid recent stories of cybersecurity breaches at major companies as well as governmental agencies.
Jeramie Scott, Senior Counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said on the matter:
“There’s always a concern that … people will decide to use facial recognition because the other options are too cumbersome and time-consuming.”
That decision-making could lead to private data slipping into the wrong hands.
The IRS does not have the best track record on this issue.
Under the Obama administration, Lois Lerner, of the IRS, used the agency to go after conservative nonprofit organizations.
The Lerner IRS scandal was one of many under Barack Obama, and showed how the executive branch can be weaponized against political opponents.
There’s no telling how the IRS could misuse sensitive data or simply let it fall into the hands of hackers.
Considering how poorly the Biden administration has handled the country after 12 months, the less information and control it has, the better.
