Big tech platforms hold shocking levels of control over the public.
People are just now coming to grips with the power of social media sites like Facebook.
And a scathing new report could ruin Facebook for good.
The Wall Street Journal has produced a series of reports on the caustic internal practices at Facebook.
The reporting is based on leaks from a company document called “The Facebook Files.”
Some journalists called for Facebook to release the document in full, and The Journal did exactly that.
“The Facebook Files” show a repeated pattern of the company ignoring serious issues despite ample warning.
From The Wall Street Journal:
“Facebook Inc. knows, in acute detail, that its platforms are riddled with flaws that cause harm, often in ways only the company fully understands. That is the central finding…based on a review of internal Facebook documents, including research reports, online employee discussions and drafts of presentations to senior management. Time and again, the documents show, Facebook’s researchers have identified the platform’s ill effects. Time and again, despite congressional hearings, its own pledges and numerous media exposés, the company didn’t fix them. The documents offer perhaps the clearest picture thus far of how broadly Facebook’s problems are known inside the company, up to the chief executive himself.”
One of Facebook’s chief issues is they’ve completely ignored the harm that subsidiary Instagram inflicts on teens, particularly teen girls.
The company was aware the data showed that their site increased depression and suicidal ideation, yet Instagram instead focused on launching a version of the platform tailored to young kids.
The initiative was scrapped amid backlash.
Facebook also has a user “whitelist” that allows certain celebrities and VIPs to break content policy guidelines with almost no repercussions.
Emails released via FOIA requests showed that CEO Mark Zuckerberg was willing to give Dr. Anthony Fauci a special platform to spread his COVID pronouncements – many now known to be outright lies – while the company was simultaneously censoring true information about COVID because they thought it could lead to vaccine hesitancy.
Facebook also took little to no enforcement when presented evidence that drug cartels and hitmen use the platform for their illicit activities.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook has also been starkly biased in its censorship of conservatives and voices that run counter to the establishment narrative as evidenced by the stunning decision to ban the then-sitting President of the United States from the platform in 2020.
Zuckerberg has sat through several toothless congressional hearings, but with the release of these stunning documents, the hammer could finally come down on Facebook.
