Facebook attempted one big move that blew up in its face

Facebook is under the microscope for its toxic online environment.

The social media giant has been one of the major sources of political division.

And Facebook attempted one big move that blew up in its face.

In light of an internal investigation, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg attempted to make the platform more amiable.

Instead, the opposite happened.

Facebook became angrier and even more divisive.

The issue was first noted by BuzzFeed chief Jonah Peretti, who contacted Facebook in 2018 to alert them that provocative and politically charged headlines spread quickly on Facebook, while more subdued news stories did not.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

“Mr. Peretti blamed a major overhaul Facebook had given to its News Feed algorithm earlier that year to boost ‘meaningful social interactions,’ or MSI, between friends and family, according to internal Facebook documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal that quote the email . . . Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said the aim of the algorithm change was to strengthen bonds between users and to improve their well-being. Facebook would encourage people to interact more with friends and family and spend less time passively consuming professionally produced content, which research suggested was harmful to their mental health.

Within the company, though, staffers warned the change was having the opposite effect, the documents show. It was making Facebook’s platform an angrier place.”

Making matters worse, Facebook has exhibited clear left-wing bias in its content moderation.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone admitted on Twitter that the company would slow the dissemination of the New York Post’s bombshell Hunter Biden story.

Conservative companies and private groups have had their pages censored or taken down altogether.

The stark double standard only serves to further polarize users.

And leaked emails showed that Facebook was censoring posts that caused vaccine hesitancy, even if they were true.

Zuckerberg also showed a willingness to boost the voice of Dr. Anthony Fauci regarding COVID procedures.

Facebook is billed as a free speech platform, but some voices are being silenced for political reasons why others are being algorithmically boosted.

The long-term effects of social media are still being studied, but the early returns are not good.

Social media companies have intentionally made their products addictive, and users are being fed one-sided ragebait.

Facebook and other sites are likely causing mental health problems that won’t fully be known for some time.
