People were barred from weddings, funerals, graduations, and everything in between.
Some people were arrested for going to empty parks, empty beaches, or even congregating at churches.
The medical professionals who argued against harsh lockdowns were slandered, ignored, or both.
At the same time, China was being lauded for its totalitarian crackdowns, which included welding people shut inside their homes.
But now as the smoke clears, the dissident voices are proving to be far more right than wrong.
Japan says COVID now no more than a flu
Japan is the latest country to loosen its COVID policies, downgrading the virus to flu status.

Elon Musk quote-tweeted a simple “…” to the message.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida officially announced, “In order to return to our ordinary daily life in Japan while pursuing measures to adapt to living with the coronavirus, we will study concrete measures to gradually move on to a next step.”
Many had argued in favor of focused protection of the elderly and immuno-compromised back in 2020, but they were shouted down.
Sweden and other countries took that approach, and fared no worse than some of the strictest lockdown countries.
The new Japanese designation is eye-opening considering comparisons between COVID and the flu were met with scorn and derision.
The COVID regime was hoping to extend its temporary powers indefinitely, but the omicron variant effectively ended those plans.
Even vaccine maven Bill Gates admitted that the omicron variant ended the pandemic for all intents and purposes.
Meanwhile, more and more people are beginning to ask questions about the COVID vaccines.
Dr. Leana Wen, CNN’s COVID propagandist, confessed that she chose not to give her own toddler the vaccine because young children are at very low risk for serious illness from the virus.
Australia, one of the most austere COVID states, rolled back its vaccine requirements for young people after growing instances of myocarditis.
And Pfizer admitted that the company never tested the vaccine for its ability to stop the transmission of the virus, which was the main selling point for demanding that everyone take the vaccine.
After three years of COVID madness, reality is finally beginning to win.
