Even in deep blue Illinois, Democrats are worried about the midterms.
Democrats there are using the state government to boost their reelection chances in an unbelieve abuse of power.
In the dead of night, Illinois Democrats passed a bill that requires gas stations and grocery stores to do free election year advertising for them.
After Democrats suspended a 2 cent increase in the state’s gas tax, business owners will be forced to put stickers on pumps informing customers of this.
The stickers are required to say, “As of July 1, 2022, the State of Illinois has suspended the inflation adjustment to the motor fuel tax through December 31, 2022. The price on this pump should reflect the suspension of the tax increase.”
The bill also requires that grocery stores use a similar message on their receipts for a grocery tax suspension.
If business owners don’t comply, they’ll face $500 daily fines.
Politicians are known for their desperate stunts, especially in election years.
But this is an outrageous abuse of power to force business owners to do political advertising for Democrats.
If they really wanted to do citizens a favor, they’d repeal those and other onerous taxes outright.
But this is a ploy to hang on to power by pretending they’re doing everyone a favor.
Government power is being abused to forcibly coerce people to support Democrats against their will.
This forced political support goes against the very idea of the First Amendment.
The same Democrat leadership doubled the state’s gas tax by 19 cents making it one of the highest in the country.
With gas prices soaring, this is an election year stunt to save drivers a measly 2 cents – but only temporarily.
This temporary move conveniently goes away shortly after election day.
Josh Sharp of the Illinois Fuel and Retail Association slammed the move.
“This industry won’t be forced into offering free election year advertising for the Governor. Ordering businesses to take part in speech that is compelled by the government under the threat of fines and criminal penalties is unwise and unconstitutional,” he said.
Retailers are preparing to sue to stop this unconstitutional scheme.
With a tough election coming up, Democrats will commit any abuse to give themselves a leg up.
