Social media has turned into the digital town square.
But there’s a dark underbelly.
Now a leading Republican blew the whistle on this social media giant’s terrifying surveillance scheme.
The legacy social media giants like Facebook and Twitter are facing a growing challenge from TikTok.
TikTok turned into the most popular social media platform for young people on its way to becoming the most downloaded app in the world during the first quarter of 2022.
This fast-growing social media platform pioneered the use of short-form videos and its competitors quickly followed.
But they’ve been slow to see results.
Now, Mark Zuckerberg is so worried about TikTok’s growth with younger users that he’s begun to copy features from it to Facebook and Instagram.
TikTok has a dark side as one of the few Chinese Big Tech platforms to break through in the West.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok has been rumored to be collecting massive amounts of data on its users with the suspicion that it all ends up in the hands of the Communist Chinese government.
Critics have dubbed it the Chinese spyware app.
The company has long denied this, claiming that user information is stored in the U.S. away from ByteDance.
While in office, President Trump issued an order to ban TikTok unless it was sold off from ByteDance but Joe Biden reversed the order shortly after he took office.
Biden and Democrats are fond of using the platform to engage with younger voters.
Now, a new report from Buzzfeed News exposed China’s real level of access to the treasure trove of data collected on TikTok.
Leaked audio from 80 internal TikTok meetings acquired by Buzzfeed News revealed that the Chinese ownership has access to non-public data on the platform’s users.
This is exactly the reason that President Trump tried to force the company to be spun off from its Chinese ownership.
“Everything is seen in China,” said a member of TikTok’s Trust and Safety department during a September 2021 meeting.
Chinese law requires that companies “support, assist, and cooperate with national intelligence efforts in accordance with law” and “protect national intelligence work secrets they are aware of.”
Because of that, Chinese companies lie about their work with the Communist government while turning data over to them.
“No surprise there, TikTok is just another invasive tool for Communist China to infiltrate Americans’ personal and proprietary information,” Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) told The Epoch Times. “This app presents a very real threat to our national security, and the United States should take strong action to stop the CCP’s espionage campaign.”
TikTok’s vice president and head of public policy in the Americas, Michael Beckerman, testified before congress that ByteDance employees didn’t have access to U.S. user data.
Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) said the leaked audio suggests that Beckerman “possibly lied to Congress, which is a felony.”
TikTok has one of the most aggressive data collection efforts on its users of any Big Tech company.
This disturbing new finding confirms that TikTok could be one of the Communist Chinese government’s biggest surveillance schemes in the U.S.
